Field Service Engineer

Base Pay Range $77,000.00/yr - $82,000.00/yr Summary This role is often the starting point for a field service engineering career at Smiths Detection. Primarily responsible for traveling to customer sites which are often high-security environments, the role of the Field Service Engineer (L1) is to maintain and repair Smiths Detection’s X‑ray and trace detection equipment using hand and power tools, as part of the field service team. This position requires face‑to‑face and remote customer‑interaction and a high level of team orientation, with a proactive approach to seeking and sharing technical knowledge. The ability to work autonomously and outside of day‑time business hours are also essential requirements. Responsibilities Travel to customer sites across metropolitan and regional/remote areas, often requiring long-distance driving, air travel, and hotel accommodation for several days per trip Troubleshoot, service and repair X‑ray and trace detection equipment at customer sites and within Smiths Detection’s service centres Complete preventative maintenance tasks according to service contracts and schedules Respond to equipment faults and other corrective maintenance requirements according to service contracts and key performance indicators Test components and circuitry of X‑ray equipment using a multimetre, computer/laptop and the inbuilt equipment‑software Diagnose the root cause of mechanical, electrical and electronics related equipment faults (involving 24 volts or less) Replace belts, rollers, motors and other mechanical components within X‑ray equipment Replace and maneuver X‑ray sources (ie. generators) and other heavy parts using lifting aides Open machines to inspect, vacuum, clean, de‑grease, repair and replace internal parts Assist with installing new equipment at customer sites, alongside Smiths Detection’s programs and installations teams and various subcontractors and customer‑stakeholders Complete field service related documentation and reports Complete technical, safety, compliance and other job related trainings, online and in‑person Maintain a clean/tidy work station and work environment Respond to queries from customers, vendors, subcontractors and internal stakeholders, verbally and in writing Consume spare parts from the warehouse/storage area and promptly update the associated records in the IT software tracking system Join regular internal team meetings and safety briefings Assist with ensuring that tools and testing equipment is maintained and calibrated Act as the designated on‑call person according to the relevant regional on‑call roster, to provide remote and in‑person technical support to customers Qualifications Certificate 3 Trade Qualification or Degree (Mechanical/Electrical/Electronic/IT) Provisional or Unrestricted driver’s license Ability to obtain security clearances and industry licenses Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite Seniority Level Entry level Employment Type Full‑time Job Function Customer Service and Manufacturing Industry Industrial Machinery Manufacturing #J-18808-Ljbffr
