Location Profile Glenallen School, located at 7 Allen Street, Glen Waverley, provides individual learning programs for students aged between 4.8 and 18 years, who have a physical disability and/or significant health impairment requiring paramedical support. The school caters for students with a wide range of intellectual abilities. Current students have complex needs and often multiple disabilities. Selection Criteria SC1. Proven experience or equivalent in providing high quality personal care and support to school aged children and young people with multiple/complex disabilities. (Relates to area 2) SC2. Demonstrated ability or equivalent to be physically involved in programs supporting students across a range of environments and functions including swimming, therapy, sports, mobility, manual handling and personal care. (Relates to area 1) SC3. Ability to understand and follow policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of the role. This includes demonstrated knowledge of OH&S, safe lifting practices, transfers and use of communication aid technology. (Relates to area 1, 2) SC4. Experience working in a team, with the capacity to work with teachers, therapists and students and the ability to accept direction and feedback. (Relates to 1, 2 & 3) Role An education support class position at this range will perform tasks that are carried out in accordance with guidelines, accepted practice, and school policy under supervision and direction. This may include coordination of other education support class staff within the work area or educational program. An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students but must not include duties of a teacher as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students can be required individually or in groups up to 4 in controlled circumstances and where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher. Certification and/or qualifications of up to three years can be required at this level (noting that Registered Nurse is not included at this level, the first level for which is Level 1 range 3). A role at this range may include: Specific support tasks to achieve outcomes. Typically, this will involve accountability for a single function, (e.g. ensuring data is properly maintained) or the co‑ordination of a work area under the direction of the principal or a manager. Assisting teachers, within an educational program, by undertaking specific support tasks or the coordination of the support function. Supervised health and wellbeing support tasks, medical intervention support tasks, or other specialised student/teacher support roles (e.g. enrolled nurses performing the role as described in schedule 3). These roles require specific qualifications and/or training, including roles where further training must be undertaken from time to time. The role is for a specific purpose, for which there will be direct accountability as opposed to support roles that are carried out by a range of staff performing routine tasks under direction. Technical tasks that require a sound knowledge of basic technical and/or scientific principles that are used to develop and adapt work methods and make judgements where there are clear guidelines and limited options. Routine technical support in libraries, science, and information technology would be typical examples. Responsibilities Personal Care Attendants work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, students, parents and the wider community in a professional manner. Personal Care Attendants will support educational programs by providing one‑to‑one or small group assistance as instructed by the trans‑disciplinary team (eg. teachers and therapists) and will work to ensure that all students experience success and achieve their individual goals. Personal Care Attendants will adhere to and maintain Department policies relating to privacy and confidentiality, occupational health and safety, and participate in the annual staff Performance and Development Program. The Personal Care Attendant will be flexible to carry out a range of duties that may vary daily. The position reports directly to the Senior Personal Care Attendant who will be responsible for coordinating the daily functions, in addition, direction for daily tasks may also be provided by teachers, therapists and senior school staff. Under the direction of the teacher/therapist/supervisor, and with appropriate training, Personal Care Attendants will carry out routine student support tasks in accordance with school policies and procedures. These will include actively assisting with student supervision and personal care support in the following settings. Bathroom School grounds Classroom Therapy activities Swimming Sporting activities Camps and excursions Physical assistance tasks include: Pushing students in wheelchairs, transferring and hoisting students Transferring students between school activities both on and off school grounds Transferring students to and from buses Physical support for students in participating in swimming, sporting and therapy activities Personal care and communication tasks include: Maintain personal hygiene of students Toileting and personal care Dressing and undressing Mealtime assistance Supporting student communication including using specialised equipment and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) system Classroom and school support tasks include: Assist in maintaining a clean classroom and school environment Ensure equipment is clean and maintained Cross infection of equipment Preparation of educational materials and equipment Set up/pack down of equipment for classroom and playground activities Personal Care Attendants will undertake a diverse range of daily tasks that are in line with the roles and responsibilities of the position, as directed. Monday, Wednesday & Friday 8.45 am to 3.30 pm at 6.25 hours per day during school terms.
