Overview Join the University of Melbourne as a Bioinformatician (Metagenomics). The role is full-time, fixed‑term for two years within the School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Microbiology and Immunology. Responsibilities Develop comprehensive, automated bioinformatics workflows for metagenomics and microbiome testing, ensuring they meet laboratory needs and NATA accreditation standards. Plan and execute validation studies to optimise metagenomics and microbiome testing performance, analysing and documenting results to NATA/ISO specifications. Collaborate with the MDU Genomics team and the Metagenomics Working Group, presenting findings and contributing to discussions. Participate in translational research projects in microbiome and metagenomics fields, particularly as applied to public health. Qualifications Master’s degree or equivalent in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or a related field. Demonstrable experience with genome sequence data, bioinformatics tools, and large genome datasets. Proficiency in a workflow system such as Nextflow or Snakemake. Verifiable experience with programming languages like Python or R. Excellent troubleshooting skills and the ability to work in a UNIX environment. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
