The Team & Role Pharmacy technicians play a vital role in the delivery of hospital pharmacy services, under the supervision of a pharmacist. They are key members of the multidisciplinary team. The role involves preparing and supplying medicines, liaising with patients and consumers to ensure the effective and safe use of medicines and working with pharmacists and other health professionals to provide timely care to our patients. For Operations services, they play a key role in procurement of medicines, distribution and supply to ward and department areas and maintaining accurate records of procurement and distribution. With the recent redevelopment of Peninsula University Hospital, we are excited to offer two new Grade 1 or 2 Pharmacy Technician roles. The pharmacy technician works under the direct supervision of pharmacists, assisting with the preparation and dispensing of medicines, stock control and replenishment, tablet packing, assisting in the manufacture of medicines and basic clerical functions. A working knowledge of pharmaceutical products and the PBS is preferred. It is expected that all Grade 1 pharmacy technicians will successfully complete an approved Certificate III course in Hospital Pharmacy within 18 months of appointment. A Grade 2 Pharmacy Technician would have completed an approved Certificate III course in Hospital Pharmacy. The duties and responsibilities include those of a Grade 1 Pharmacy Technician. They must show a keenness to be involved in hospital pharmacy activities, and a willingness to undertake further training to enhance skill and knowledge. They may also assist in the training of new technicians and students.
