About The Opportunity Undertake state-of-the-art research in Antarctic paleo ice sheet science Collaborate to build a new three-dimensional model of Antarctic glacial isostatic adjustment Full Time, 3.5 year fixed-term position based in Hobart This postdoctoral research position will work on reconstruction of the Antarctic Ice Sheet, and particularly the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, from Last Glacial Maximum to present. The position is part of a new prestigious ARC Laureate Fellowship team of about 15 researchers who are being assembled to work together on tracking and predicting the future of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. The successful candidate will bring their expertise in paleo ice sheet change to develop an ensemble of ice sheet reconstructions consistent with data and informed by models. The successful candidate will work closely with others to build a new three-dimensional model of Antarctic Glacial Isostatic Adjustment. They will contribute to building a collegial and collaborative team research environment. Team researchers will be well supported by travel and professional development funds. This is an opportunity to be part of a new and exciting team whilst working at the world’s leading Antarctic and Southern Ocean university, based within the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS). The ideal candidate would know about changes in the East Antarctic Ice Sheet since the Last Glacial Maximum. You will have an interest in exploring how model outputs can be combined with field data constraints and machine learning to create improved reconstructions of the ice sheet. This role is based in Hobart, Tasmania and visa sponsorship and relocation allowances may be considered for the right candidate. What You’ll Do Participate in collaborative and collegial research as part of a team of inter-disciplinary researchers focused on the East Antarctic Ice Sheet Publish findings in international peer‑reviewed journals Supervision of PhD and undergraduate research students Make use of ice sheet models, machine learning and published field datasets to reconstruct the evolving post‑LGM Antarctic Ice Sheet. Initiate and develop competitive external and other funding applications to support ice sheet science at the University of Tasmania What We’re Looking For A PhD or equivalent in ice sheet science or a closely related field. A demonstrated ability and understanding of research in the field of paleo ice sheet reconstruction. Demonstrated success in fostering and sustaining meaningful, productive networks across the discipline, professional sphere, and broader community. In depth knowledge of the Antarctic paleo ice sheet datasets or models and their uncertainties, with a focus on the post‑LGM period. A record of code development for data or model output analysis. A clear desire and capacity for developing machine learning approaches, preferably with experience in its application to ice sheet problems. Salary details Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level A and will have a total remuneration package of up to $125,877 comprising base salary within the range of $83,198 to $107,587 plus 17% superannuation.
