Rust Engineering Lead – Linux and Open Source Join Canonical's mission to accelerate open source. Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems worldwide, with Ubuntu as a critical platform in cloud, data science, AI, engineering, IoT and more. We seek Rust Engineering Leads of all levels to champion Rust across Canonical’s ecosystem—from Ubuntu to proprietary projects. We see Rust as a key new language for system‑level services and a natural evolution for code traditionally written in C/C++. What your day will look like Design, implement, test and document Rust software for Linux. Advocate for Rust adoption within Canonical and upstream communities. Identify projects and codebases that would benefit from Rust. Debug and resolve issues encountered by users. Participate in engineering processes: code reviews, architectural reviews. Collaborate with the community and colleagues on technical specifications. Seek improvements to engineering and operations practices. Deploy and operate services developed by the team (in some cases). Contribute to product success through technical advocacy. What we are looking for in you Exceptional academic background (high school and university). Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, STEM, or a compelling alternative path. For senior roles: experience building, deploying, and operating distributed systems and APIs. Track record of exceeding expectations. Well‑organised, self‑starting, and able to deliver on schedule. Appreciative of diversity; professional and effective in multi‑cultural settings. Experience designing and writing high‑quality Rust software on Linux. Passion for Linux at the system level. Professional written and spoken English. Strong work ethic and confidence to collaborate with motivated colleagues. Excellent interpersonal skills, curiosity, flexibility, accountability. Result‑oriented with drive to meet commitments. Ability to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks each). Nice‑to‑have skills Experience developing for Ubuntu. Experience with LXD, MicroK8s, SnapD, IoT, Juju, Ubuntu Core, Ubuntu Pro. Performance engineering and security experience.
