A leading defence technology company is seeking a Systems Integration Software Engineer to design, build, and maintain the internal software and tools that connect embedded systems, test environments, and production workflows. This role sits at the intersection of embedded engineering, backend development, and system integration, supporting both rapid prototyping and high-reliability production lines. Working closely with engineers across multiple disciplines, you’ll deliver the tooling and platform components that ensure consistent, robust operation across diverse devices and environments. You’ll help evolve legacy systems, introduce new automation capabilities, and drive improvements in reliability, documentation, and developer experience. Key Responsibilities Develop and maintain software services, tools, and interfaces for embedded Linux platforms. Implement new features and internal applications supporting R&D and production workflows. Collaborate with hardware, firmware, and software teams to ensure seamless system-level integration. Create and maintain high-quality documentation, diagrams, and internal guides. Support and modernise older tools and applications, improving maintainability and performance. Provide technical expertise, mentoring, and code review to colleagues. Skills & Experience Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mechatronics, Electronic Engineering, or equivalent experience. 5–7+ years’ experience in software or systems engineering roles. Strong command-line and development experience in Linux environments. Proficiency in Python (required) and experience with Golang or modern C++. Familiarity with embedded Linux development workflows. Competence with DevOps and development tooling (Git, Jira, Confluence, Docker, GitLab CI/CD, Poetry). Experience with networked communication protocols such as gRPC, REST, TCP/UDP, or other high-performance messaging approaches. Background in developing tools or systems used in manufacturing, validation, or production environments. Strong unit testing experience and comfort working with CI/CD pipelines. Desirable Exposure to automated testing frameworks, DevOps workflows, and system monitoring. Experience integrating with lab instrumentation via VISA or similar interfaces. Knowledge of RF test equipment or hardware validation workflows. Familiarity with microservice architectures, API design, and cross-cutting concerns (logging, persistence, configuration, etc.). Personal Attributes Exceptional written communication and documentation skills. Strong debugging and troubleshooting instincts. Close attention to detail and a disciplined approach to engineering practice. Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a fast-moving team. Comfortable managing multiple threads of work under time pressure. Proactive, supportive, and willing to assist across diverse engineering tasks when needed.
