Probate Attorney / Trusts and Estates - General Attorney in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory Job Responsibilities The role of Associate or Senior Associate in the Corporate & Commercial department at the law firm involves a range of responsibilities focused primarily on estate planning and administration, probate, and trusts. The candidate will be expected to provide strategic legal advice and empathetic support to clients who are navigating complex and often sensitive issues. Drafting various types of Wills, including simple and Testamentary Wills. Preparing Enduring Power of Attorney documents for Victoria and NSW, as well as Appointments of Medical Treatment Decision Maker. Composing detailed explanatory letters for clients. Advising beneficiaries regarding their entitlements under a Will. Offering counsel to clients in relation to claims against estates, negotiating claims, and working on pertinent court documents. Instructing at mediation and court hearings. Representing clients at VCAT for matters under the Guardianship List. Drafting costs agreements and monitoring estimates, updating as necessary. Accurate time recording and billing, alongside reviewing and monitoring production and billing reports. Supervising and mentoring junior lawyers and law graduates. Contributing to the Learning and Development programs at the law firm, including creating and presenting CPD sessions. Engaging in business development initiatives aimed at expanding and enhancing the practice. Education and Experience At least 5 years of post‑admission experience in a Wills & Estates practice. Related property and commercial experience will be highly regarded. Excellent drafting skills and keen attention to detail. Strong communication skills with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly. A commercially minded approach with a willingness to work on diverse matters. Well‑developed initiative, critical thinking, and strategic adaptability. The ability to work independently with limited supervision.
