Senior MES Engineer

Director of Cumulus Automation MES (TilliT), SCADA & IIoT Role Purpose The Senior MES Engineer role is based in Australia (Melbourne preferred, with remote work from other locations in Australia considered). The position is responsible for the design, configuration, integration and ongoing support of Manufacturing Execution System (MES) solutions for Cumulus Automation’s clients. The role combines hands‑on technical implementation with client‑facing consulting, ensuring that MES, SCADA and integration projects are delivered safely, on time and to a high standard of quality. The Senior MES Engineer will work closely with client stakeholders, and other team members to translate operational requirements into robust, supportable digital solutions that improve production visibility, quality and efficiency. Key Responsibilities Lead the design and implementation of MES solutions, including configuration of production models, digital work orders, quality forms, scheduling, OEE and traceability workflows. Configure and integrate MES platforms (e.g. TilliT, Ignition-based solutions or similar) in line with agreed functional and technical specifications. Develop and maintain interfaces between MES, SCADA, PLCs and business systems (e.g. ERP, WMS, historians) using APIs, OPC UA, MQTT, SQL and related technologies. Ensure solutions are designed with security, reliability, maintainability and scalability in mind. Client Engagement & Consulting Participate in and/or lead workshops, discovery sessions and design reviews with client stakeholders. Translate business and operational requirements into clear functional and technical documentation. Provide guidance and recommendations to clients on best‑practice use of MES and SCADA within their operations. Project Execution & Quality Contribute to planning and estimation of MES‑related work. Deliver assigned tasks and work packages within agreed timeframes and budgets. Support and participate in testing activities (FAT, SAT, UAT), including defect investigation and resolution. Prepare and maintain project documentation including configuration records, interface specifications, test evidence and handover materials. Support & Continuous Improvement Provide support for MES and related systems, including investigation and resolution of incidents and problems. Identify opportunities to improve system performance, usability and reliability, and implement agreed enhancements. Contribute to internal standards, templates and accelerators to improve repeatability and quality of MES delivery. Technical Leadership & Mentoring Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers and project team members as required. Share knowledge, patterns and lessons learned with the broader team. Reporting Relationships Reports to: Directors, Cumulus Automation (or their delegate). May provide day‑to‑day technical direction to Junior/Intermediate Engineers and contractors on specific projects. Location & Travel Remote/work‑from‑home, must be based in Australia. Regular travel to client sites and other Cumulus Automation locations is required as part of the role. Skills, Experience & Attributes Essential Significant experience in the design, configuration and support of MES, SCADA or related industrial software systems in a manufacturing environment. Practical experience with at least one MES or production management platform and associated integrations. Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and operations (e.g. food & beverage, FMCG, process industries or similar). Proficiency with industrial connectivity and integration technologies (e.g. REST APIs, JSON, SQL, OPC UA, MQTT, PLC interfaces). Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to work independently and take ownership of outcomes. Effective communication skills, including the ability to engage with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders. Desirable Familiarity with Ignition and/or MES platforms such as TilliT. Understanding of ISA‑95 / ISA‑88 principles and layered industrial architectures. Personal Attributes Professional, collaborative and client‑focused.
