We are a leading Australian manufacturer supplying precision-fabricated components and assemblies to many different sectors, including defence. We are seeking an experienced Welding Engineer to strengthen our welding capability, lead technical decision-making, and support high-integrity fabrication across our operations. This role offers the opportunity to influence welding standards, guide production teams, and contribute directly to the quality and reliability of our manufactured components. About the Role The Welding Engineer will develop and maintain welding procedures, lead qualification activities, support production with expert troubleshooting, and ensure compliance with AS/NZS, EN, ISO, ASME, AWS, API and customer-specific requirements. You will work closely with welders, supervisors, engineers, QA teams, playing a key role in the integrity of welded assemblies. This is a hands‑on and technically challenging position ideal for someone confident in weld metallurgy, standards interpretation, and practical manufacturing support. Key Responsibilities Lead welding engineering activities across multiple fabrication projects. Review project specifications, drawings and applicable Codes & Standards to develop compliant welding procedures and guidance for production and welding personnel. Develop, qualify, write and certify WPSs, PQRs and WPQRs for internal use and client approval. Maintain our corporate repository of welding procedures, welder qualifications and related documentation. Coordinate welding procedure qualification testing with metallurgical laboratories, including mechanical testing and macro examination. Oversee, supervise and witness welding of PQR test coupons to ensure compliance with qualification requirements. Review, comment on and approve supplier welding procedures and welder performance qualifications. Provide high-level technical support related to AS/NZS, ASME, AWS, API and other relevant welding standards. Assist production teams in resolving welding issues through hands‑on troubleshooting, root‑cause analysis and corrective action planning. Lead or support weld failure investigations and report findings with recommended corrective actions. Provide technical support for welder performance testing and witness qualification as required. Collaborate closely with fabrication, engineering, QA and NDT teams to ensure high‑quality, compliant weld outcomes. Perform other welding‑engineering duties as required within the scope of the role. Skills & Experience Excellent understanding of welding theory, metallurgy and advanced welding processes. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, especially in diagnosing welding defects and process‑related issues. Proven ability to review, critique and develop welding procedures in accordance with applicable standards. Experience preparation, conducting and witnessing WPS/PQR/WPQR qualification activities. Strong competency in interpreting engineering drawings, weld symbols, and NDT reports. Solid knowledge of AS/NZS 1554 and other relevant international standards. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to lead and train welders. Attention to detail and the ability to produce high‑quality technical documentation.
