Deputy Principal (International Division) The Sydney Japanese International School (SJIS) seeks to appoint a Deputy Principal (International Division) to commence from Term 2, 2026. About Our School Sydney Japanese International School is a unique educational institution offering both the Japanese Curriculum and the New South Wales (NSW) Curriculum. We are a small, nurturing school located in the serene environment of Terrey Hills. The International Division of SJIS offers the NSW K–6 curriculum to children from diverse cultural backgrounds. SJIS fosters student development through its unique bilingual and bicultural program. The International Division prides itself on a high level of academic achievement, small class sizes, and a caring, stimulating learning environment. The Role The Deputy Principal (International Division) is accountable to the Principal and the General Manager, forming the leadership team alongside the Deputy Principal (Japanese Division). Consultation and collaboration, as part of the leadership team, is an essential component of the role to guide school improvement and unified management across the school. The successful applicant will have proven teaching and leadership experience within the NSW curriculum, as well as demonstrated: Educational Leadership: Capacity to lead staff in achieving excellent student outcomes through quality teaching and classroom practice. Curriculum Expertise: Sound knowledge of curriculum, assessment, and student welfare, with the ability to design inclusive teaching and learning programs. Capacity Building: Skills to manage performance and build the professional capacity of individuals and teams. Communication: Highly developed interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff, and parents through a consultative approach. Resource Management: Ability to plan and manage budgets and resources effectively and equitably to achieve educational goals. Inclusion & Diversity: Skills in implementing strategies for bilingual education, EAL/D, and students with specific learning needs. Digital Innovation: Capacity to ensure effective integration of ICT as a tool for enhanced teaching and learning. Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities Operational and Strategic Planning Support the School’s Japanese and Australian educational values by working toward a common vision. Demonstrate Intercultural competence and a commitment to operating effectively within a bi-cultural environment, actively integrating and upholding the Japanese of the school. Lead through collaborative processes that maintain professional relationships and partnerships with the Japanese Division. Consult with the Principal and General Manager regarding any proposed variations to policies, procedures, and staffing. Work with the Leadership Team to develop and implement policies necessary for teaching, learning, curriculum, and wellbeing. Collaborate with the Principal and General Manager to recruit high-quality teaching staff. Ensure full compliance with NESA requirements and School policies. Assist the General Manager in compiling and overseeing the International Division’s financial budgets. Teaching and Learning Oversight of curriculum policies, teaching, assessment, recording, and reporting within the International Division. Collaborate across the whole school to ensure evidence-informed teaching practices and a coordinated approach to wellbeing. Promote a culture of high expectations and continuous improvement. Lead collaborative planning and review the effectiveness of curriculum implementation. Provide constructive feedback to colleagues guided by the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. Lead professional learning that has a positive impact on teacher development, student achievement and wellbeing. Note: A small teaching component is connected to this position. Manage staff Professional Development Plans. The preferred candidate will be expected to: Support and implement the vision of our school Implement and uphold best practice teaching and learning strategies Engage in further professional development as part of continual learning Abide by and comply with Child Protection and WHS policies Fulfil roles as required to comply with duty of care obligations Qualifications and Experience Tertiary qualifications in Education (Postgraduate level is highly desirable). Significant experience in a senior leadership role within a school setting. Demonstrated capacity to lead and manage high-performing teams. Experienced Primary school teacher familiar with the implementation of new NESA syllabuses. Advanced digital literacy skills. Skills High-Level Communication: Strong interpersonal skills with clear, concise, and professional verbal and written engagement. Empowering leader: Ability to mentor, motivate, and build individual capabilities. Team building: Expertise in forming and leading effective, goal-oriented teams. Digital Literacy: Advanced proficiency in educational technologies and their practical application in a learning environment. Language Requirements Japanese language skills are not required. However, an understanding of Japanese culture is advantageous. Candidates must demonstrate a willingness to work harmoniously in a bilingual environment.
