Lead Project Engineer – BESS GE Vernova is inviting applications for the Lead Project Engineer – BESS role. Location Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Overview Your role as Lead Project Engineer – BESS will be part of a multi‑disciplinary engineering team within the global engineering organisation, executing energy storage projects across the region. You will be the focal point for technical leadership on projects for the energy storage business in Australia, working alongside project management teams to meet project objectives of safety, quality, delivery and cost. You will also provide technical guidance and advice to customers, and identify and implement improvements on processes, tools and system solutions. Technical experience within power or utilities will be useful in anticipating customer needs and delivering practical solutions for customer satisfaction. Essential Responsibilities Lead and coordinate all balance‑of‑plant technical aspects of energy storage projects, including development of single line drawings and schematics, plan and elevation drawings, general arrangement and site layout, relay protection and control requirements, layouts for LV/HV equipment, conduit, cable, wiring, grounding and control buildings. As the technical leader, develop and update schedules, support sourcing initiatives, plan and track project design reviews, manage quality control/quality assurance, and oversee contractor management. Provide oversight and reviews of deliverables in the proposal/bid phase, estimating or reviewing design man‑hours and materials, conceptual design engineering and BOM, directing designers and drafters, preparing proposal documentation, writing and/or reviewing technical specifications, supporting vendor quotations, and developing assumptions, clarifications, and technical responses. Direct the efforts of engineers and designers, including writing equipment specifications and contractor work scopes, requesting and evaluating vendor quotations for equipment such as energy storage containers, inverters, control & SCADA equipment, HV/MV circuit breakers, switchgear, disconnect switches, LV/MV power transformers, MV/HV cable, and protection and control systems. Serve as the single point of contact for technical issues for the customer and project manager. Interface with customers and project team members for final commissioning. Coordinate with sourcing and the project team on technical matters to meet project specifications, cost control objectives, and schedule objectives, ensuring delivery of a high‑quality product on time and on or under budget. Define processes and procedures, perform root cause analyses, implement corrective actions, validate process control, and support quality and standardization initiatives. Qualifications And Requirements Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics or Instrumentation Engineering from an accredited college/university. At least 7 to 10 years of experience in a similar role within the power, utilities or energy storage sectors. Familiarity with standards such as National Connections Guidelines, Energy Networks Australia, AEMO, G99, CDM regulations and AS/NZS3000. Excellent communication skills for managing and influencing internal and external stakeholders. Technical knowledge of power conversion equipment, including generators, switchboards, transformers, converters, motors, energy storage, cabling, etc. Experience in design engineering and field engineering. Ability to read and write technical specifications. Excellence in customer service and commercial awareness. Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally. Desired Characteristics Experience interpreting power system design outputs such as SLDs, LV & MV protection & coordination, voltage drop/dip calculations, load flow and fault studies, transient system analysis, harmonic (VTHD) calculations, MV & LV cabling, quality of power supply, and EMC. Strong multi‑tasking and prioritisation skills across multiple projects with strict time scales, maintaining professionalism and integrity. Excellent report writing, organisational, problem‑solving, attention‑to‑detail, oral and written communication, interpersonal and leadership skills. Cross‑functional capability, matrix‑environment adaptability, and exposure to international teams. Team‑oriented mindset and demonstrated technical aptitude with business acumen.
