Postdoctoral Researcher/Research Fellow Si-ZERO 2026 About the Role We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher (Level A) or Research Fellow (Level B) to join our Fluid and Process Dynamics (FPD) Group within the School of Engineering and deliver a research project on “Reactor Development of Molten Oxide Electrolysis for Silicon” under Swinburne University’s Si-ZERO (Silicon Zero-Emission Recycling, Refining, and Production) Global Research Program funded by the Quad Clean Energy Diversification Scheme. You will work closely with researchers at Swinburne, other universities, and industry partners to design and build a versatile pilot-scale reactor with two operational modes: (1) Molten Oxide Electrolysis (MOE), and (2) electrorefining. The MOE process applies controlled electrical currents to produce Silicon or to accelerate and improve impurities removal during electrorefining. The aim of the is to develop a versatile process for simultaneous production and refining of silicon in a single step, maximising recovery efficiency and minimising waste and energy consumption. Roles include independent research, collaboration, and support of ancillary projects. You will be required to work with a high degree of autonomy, demonstrate initiative and responsibility, and pursue research directions under the leadership of the Lead Chief Investigator. Position is full‑time for an initial two‑year term with a one‑year extension option. Please note: the successful candidate should be available to commence as soon as possible. About You Thorough knowledge of thermodynamic/kinetics modelling and hands‑on experience with thermodynamic/thermochemical packages, and high‑temperature experimentation (kinetics and equilibrium). Proven ability to design and conduct independent research projects within a broader team environment, to identify complementary expertise and initiate appropriate collaborations, and to analyse the state of technology from publications and patents. Demonstrated high standard of interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment. Experience in furnace design and scale‑up of processes (Essential for Level B). A track record of high‑quality journal publications (Essential for Level B). Qualifications Doctoral qualification (or research experience) in Materials Science/Engineering, Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or related areas.
