Through research, education and strategic collaborations, the Institute is committed to protecting rights, dismantling inequality, and fostering a culture of accountability where human rights abuses are challenged and rectified. Why your role matters In this unique and specific role, the Editor is responsible for coordinating and managing editorial content and production of the Australian Journal of Human Rights (AJHR), the flagship publication of the Institute. Working closely with the Editorial Board, authors, reviewers, and the publishing partner, the Editor oversees all aspects of the journal’s editorial and production processes. This includes managing peer review workflows, coordinating publication schedules, maintaining editorial quality and consistency, and supporting the journal’s strategic direction under the guidance of the Institute’s leadership. The position reports to the Director, Australian Human Rights Institute, and contributes to strengthening the Institute’s profile as a leading platform for human rights scholarship and public discourse. Key Accountabilities Manage the end‑to‑end editorial and production process for the Australian Journal of Human Rights, ensuring timely and high‑quality publication of all issues. Liaise with the Editorial Board, authors, reviewers, and publisher to facilitate submissions, peer review, revisions, and final approvals. Ensure that all published material meets academic and editorial standards consistent with the journal’s aims and scope. Work with the Editorial Board and the Institute’s leadership to develop editorial policies, themes, and special issues aligned with the Institute’s strategic objectives. Oversee correspondence and communications related to submissions, reviews, and publication queries. Maintain the journal’s online submission and peer review system (e.g., ScholarOne or equivalent) and ensure accurate records and data management. Provide regular updates to the Editorial Board on publication timelines, submissions, and performance metrics. Contribute to continuous improvement of journal processes and implement best practices in academic publishing and ethics. Key Skills & Experience Relevant tertiary qualification in law, humanities, social sciences, or a related discipline, with subsequent relevant experience, or equivalent competence gained through a combination of education, training, and professional experience. Demonstrated experience in academic publishing, editing, or journal management. Experience with online submission and peer review systems (e.g., ScholarOne, Editorial Manager) is desirable. Strong organisational and project management skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet publication deadlines. Experience coordinating peer review processes and working effectively with authors and reviewers. Proven ability to collaborate with academics, professional staff, and publishing partners. Experience supervising interns or providing mentorship is desirable. Sound understanding of academic integrity, editorial ethics, and quality assurance in scholarly publishing. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
