The position is for provision of anaesthesia and perioperative medical services to the Prince of Wales and Sydney Children’s Hospital (Randwick). You will be required to work at different facilities and locations within the NSW health system. The Prince of Wales/Sydney Children’s Hospitals currently have 14 general operating theatres, 6 nominally paediatric, with an additional specialised hybrid vascular theatre. There are separate Urology and Cardiothoracic theatres on the campus and a range of external anaesthetising locations including radiology, radiotherapy and paediatric procedural areas.
The Prince of Wales and Sydney Children’s Hospital Rotational scheme is accredited for 156 weeks of training by ANZCA. All surgical specialty units can be completed as part of training in our network. Trainees can expect to rotate through intensive care units at Prince of Wales and/or Sydney Children’s Hospital and a variety of secondments - these include The Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, Royal Hospital for Women (RHW is located on the Randwick Campus), Coffs Harbour Base, Liverpool, Sutherland and Wollongong Hospitals. Anaesthesia trainees also care for patients in the cardiac catheter labs, CCU cardioversions, radiology (adult and paediatric including MRI, neuro and other interventional radiology) and cardiac arrest calls in any of the POW, SCH, Bright Alliance Comprehensive Cancer Centre or RHW.
Most trainees should expect to spend 3 - 6 months each year on rotation. An applicant must be eligible to be an approved vocational trainee with ANZCA by the commencement of the new clinical year. Applicants seeking ANZCA training positions in years 1 – 4 are eligible to apply, however the service requirements of the department are considered when selecting seniority of applicants. These scheme positions are generally for four years (subject to satisfactory progress) for IT and Early BT trainees. Shorter contracts may be offered for those in more advanced stages of training.
What you'll be doing The primary purpose of a Trainee in Anaesthesia is to provide anaesthesia care in a complex clinical environment. This will be done under supervision appropriate to the level of training of the applicant and in line with recommendations of the training program of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) or as part of the CICM or ACEM training programme or Diploma of Rural Generalist Anaesthesia, where this is applicable. Trainees are expected to extend their knowledge and skills in managing anaesthesia across multiple subspeciality areas of anaesthesia in order to meet the professional standards set by ANZCA. They are required to deliver anaesthesia, perioperative care and pain management services inside and outside the operating rooms and to perform other duties during rotations to other areas as directed. Trainees will participate as a multidisciplinary team member across key areas of anaesthetics including:- anaesthesia and sedation (including obstetric anaesthesia where relevant)

- pain medicine
- perioperative medicine
- resuscitation
- trauma and crisis management
