About The Role: As a Software Engineering Manager, you will lead teams responsible for improving and maintaining various technology systems and applications. You will oversee prioritised technology projects and initiatives, ensuring they align with and support the organisation’s strategic goals. In this leadership role, you will manage a team of Software Engineers, Test Engineers, and Delivery personnel, providing guidance and day-to-day management. You will be a key member of the Software Engineering team within the IT division, reporting directly to the Head of Engineering. Your responsibilities will include overseeing the execution of software engineering and testing practices, tools, and standards. You will play a crucial role in enhancing the technical capabilities and delivery maturity of the team, helping ensure alignment with the broader digital and technological objectives set by the Head of Engineering and GM of Engineering. Ultimately, your efforts will contribute to achieving the business’s commercial goals. What You'll Do: Work with IT leaders to develop resource plans and objectives for the Software Engineering function that align with the 3-year strategic plan and annual IT and business goals. Recruit, develop, and retain high-performing Software Engineers and Test Engineers. Set team vision and goals, foster a positive team culture, and provide mentorship and development opportunities. Oversee Delivery Leads and Team Leads in planning and executing technology solutions, ensuring strategic alignment, efficient resource management, and collaboration with cross-functional teams. Define, implement, and enforce software engineering and testing standards, practices, processes, and tooling to enhance productivity and team performance. Lead continuous improvement initiatives to optimise system maintenance and delivery workflows. Identify and manage risks within the Software Engineering function, in line with risk management frameworks and policies. Collaborate with IT Security and Risk teams to implement controls and manage risks effectively. Build and maintain strong relationships with IT leaders, cross-functional stakeholders, and external partners to achieve business objectives. Support new business pursuits, proposals, initiative explore phases, and kick-off meetings. Ensure SLA compliance. Establish common KPIs to measure team effectiveness, such as lead time, cycle time, deployment frequency, bug rates, time to resolve issues, team efficiency, team velocity, and other relevant performance metrics. Work with the Head of Engineering, Delivery, and Governance teams to provide accurate and timely updates on system maintenance, enhancements, and ongoing technology initiatives. Stay updated on industry trends, drive innovation, and adopt new technologies to improve efficiency and support strategic objectives. What You’ll Bring: Proven experience in managing and delivering complex software engineering and testing projects. Success in hiring, retaining, and developing high-performance teams. Experience managing teams of 10+ Software Engineers and Test Analysts, including performance reviews. Deep knowledge of software engineering and testing standards, methodologies, and tools. Strong leadership in maintaining, enhancing, and delivering technical solutions. Excellent communication and collaboration skills across teams and divisions. Proficiency in risk identification and mitigation within software engineering. Strong analytical skills to translate business objectives into actionable plans. Expertise in microservices, APIs, and cloud platforms like AWS and Azure DevOps. Critical thinking, facilitation, and attention to detail in all aspects of work.
