Assistant Director Full-Time and Part-Time Temporary

We are seeking enthusiastic and dedicated team members with a suitable background in legal policy, health and/or mental health policy development, implementation and evaluation, and/or project management. The Assistant Directors in Mental Health Policy and Strategy will be responsible for providing legal and/or health policy advice, policy development, and implementation of legislative reforms in relation to the statutory review of the Mental Health Act 2015 and other related mental health policy and legislative reform work. The Assistant Directors will be responsible for planning, consultation and delivery of mental health policy and legislative reform processes in close collaboration with other ACT Government Directorates and local stakeholders. The work involves drawing on evidence, community consultation and research to develop and analyse policy options, presenting recommendations, drafting legislative packages and Cabinet correspondence, and supporting the implementation of innovative and effective solutions to complex challenges. The roles require strong engagement across sectors, including with people with lived experience. The role also includes, but is not limited to, the provision of strategic mental health and/or legal policy advice and project management and being a key point of response for mental health matters related to the Mental Health Act 2015. Eligibility/Other Requirements: Tertiary qualifications in law, public health policy or a related field, relevant policy and planning and/or project management experience in the areas of health and/or mental health. A demonstrated knowledge of legislative processes including the development of policy to inform legislative reform. Familiarity with the Mental Health Act 2015 and associated functions or the ability to rapidly acquire the requisite knowledge. Notes: This is a temporary position available from 5 January 2026 up until 5 December 2026. There is one full-time, and one part-time position available at 29:24 hours per week, and the full‑time salary noted above will be pro‑rated. A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months.
