Overview Commerce is looking for a Lead Software Engineer, specialising in front-end technologies, to work across multiple domains in the rapidly evolving e-commerce landscape. The role is a highly impactful technical leadership position focused on front-end decisions across multiple Commerce domains. Our teams support both B2C and B2B commerce, delivering fast, accessible, and intuitive interfaces for storefronts, checkouts, and merchant tools. Commerce, named one of Australia’s Coolest companies by Anthill Magazine, is led by a global engineering team with offices in Austin, San Francisco, Kyiv and Sydney. We build a SaaS ecommerce platform and partner with BigCommerce, Feedonomics, and Makeswift to deliver secure, scalable solutions. What You’ll Do Partner across multiple engineering teams to align front-end approaches, reduce duplication, and ensure a cohesive user experience platform-wide. Drive front-end architectural standards and patterns across teams and domains, ensuring maintainability, scalability, and long-term consistency of the platform’s user interfaces. Shape the front-end developer experience by improving build pipelines, testing strategies, and performance monitoring to support fast iteration and high-traffic usage. Collaborate with engineers, designers and product managers to define stories, assess scope and technical concerns, and set the standard for code quality through thoughtful reviews, mentoring, and establishing best practices for front-end development. Help teams establish and maintain their “technical vision,” outlining the technical direction, values, and architectural decisions guiding their work. Work with product leadership to influence roadmap direction, balancing delivery speed with sustainable technical investment and long-term quality. Ensure that technical decisions support goals of quality, performance, scalability, reliability, availability and security. Lead the design and implementation of new features with focus on testability, extensibility, and maintainability, guiding others to do the same. Who Are You You’re a trusted professional with at least 6 years of experience building products; you have ideas and opinions you’ve tested and refined through your work. Education: Minimum Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, SW, CE, MIS. You’re an excellent communicator capable of explaining the rationale behind ideas in person, on Slack, or in code reviews. You work closely with product and design to shape and scope work, weigh trade-offs, and drive projects from concept through delivery, turning complexity into well-structured outcomes. Extensive experience with TypeScript and front-end frameworks like React; deep experience designing and evolving scalable front-end systems, design systems, and shared UI frameworks; experience defining state management strategies and guiding architectural decisions for performance and maintainability. You have influenced front-end practices across teams or products, driving consistency and reducing duplication. You have a solid understanding of API design and modern programming and design principles; you write tested, maintainable code and care about code quality. You are passionate about modern technologies and tools, focusing on finding the right tools for the job rather than a single technology. You lead by example: owning your work, being accountable for results, and mentoring engineers through coaching, pairing, code reviews, and design guidance.
