Senior Sister / Charge Nurse, Children's Emergency Department The closing date is 10 December. We’re seeking an experienced senior nurse for an exciting opportunity in our busy Children's Emergency Department at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, committed, and able to work well under pressure, with a strong desire to develop their skills. As part of a clinical team that includes Band 7 nurses, ED consultants and the Matron for Children’s Emergency Care, you will share responsibility for the department. You will work clinically alongside nursing staff, providing expertise and support. The role offers the chance to develop management and leadership skills within a diverse and supportive team. As a Band 7 nurse you will be responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating care programmes, setting care standards for children and their families in the ED, and leading nursing colleagues. This clinical position requires you to work shifts, including nights and weekends, and includes management time for completing leadership duties throughout the year. If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you Main duties of the job Role Summary The post holder will support the Matron and senior sisters / charge nurses to ensure that high quality, patient‑focused care is delivered within the Children’s Emergency Service. Actively participate in the day‑to‑day clinical and operational management of the department. Act as a clinical leader and role model whilst providing direct quality patient care and sharing expertise with colleagues. Work within the ED team on professional nursing issues and management of clinical governance. Guide the activity of nursing, medical and other staff to ensure rapid assessment, treatment and ultimately transfer/discharge of children and young people. Participate in educational and training programmes for junior members of the team, including acting as a preceptor to newly qualified nurses. Lead a team of nurses on a shift‑by‑shift basis. Work flexibly to achieve the key responsibilities of the post. Responsibilities Provide specialist paediatric knowledge in the clinical care of emergency patients with varying complaints, utilising advanced nursing skills across the children’s emergency care speciality. Ensure that all staff are aware of and meet the needs of patients and relatives in a courteous, helpful and compassionate manner. Maintain effective relationships within the multi‑professional team. Maintain and develop personal clinical expertise and knowledge. Work in line with the Trust’s Safeguarding Adults and Children procedures. Act as the shift leader, supervising, co‑ordinating and controlling the provision of high quality care within the Children’s Emergency Service. Pilot and embed the Patient First Improvement System (PFIS) in the department, applying the methodology to all service improvement projects. Lead regular CED huddles with the consultant in charge and bed coordinator, promoting patient safety and experience and working towards compliance with the 4‑hour and 12‑hour standards. Account for reasons patients wait longer than expected, leading quality improvement projects, PDSA cycles and learning around staffing issues. Collaborate with the practice development team to promote continuous education and innovation within the multi‑professional team. Promote reflective practice, fostering a culture of learning and development. Participate in the Trust appraisal process and meet performance targets. Protect confidential information in adherence to Trust and statutory policies. Maintain effective communication with patients, carers, and the multi‑professional and multi‑agency team. Lead the team to facilitate safe discharge and specialist nursing advice where appropriate. Ensure all written and verbal information is clear, concise and entered accurately in the computer system. Act in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and meet all legal and statutory requirements. Lead, direct, motivate and support the team on duty, setting and maintaining high standards. Manage patient flow, including anticipating and mitigating potential delays or issues to the emergency pathway. Manage resources (staffing, equipment, supplies, financial governance) within a finite budget. Attend and undertake mandatory training updates as required. Plan and participate in personal development activities in line with the post’s requirements. Achieve and demonstrate agreed standards of personal and professional development. Identify learning needs and jointly plan training with your line manager. Participate in the Trust’s appraisal process to discuss role contributions and service improvements. Person Specification Education and Qualifications NMC registration Degree in nursing or a related subject APLS / EPLS provider Teaching and Assessing in Practice / Mentorship module (or equivalent) Evidence of post‑registration study in paediatrics APLS / EPLS instructor History taking and physical assessment course Management experience (including leading a team) Experience of supervising and appraising staff Skills and Experience Highly effective communication skills (verbal, non‑verbal and written) Awareness of equality and diversity Ability to motivate a team Ability to rapidly determine priorities for patient care Excellent management and leadership skills Experience working in acute/emergency paediatrics Awareness of own leadership style Experience of policy development Quality improvement experience / PFIS Optimistic outlook, ideas for role development and a clear motivation for this role Team player Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Evidence of championing diversity in previous roles (as appropriate) Evidence of personal development to improve understanding of equalities issues Disclosure and Barring Service check (subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act – Exceptions Order) Salary £47,810 to £54,710 a year pro rata. #J-18808-Ljbffr
