About the organisation The Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA) is the national body representing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors and medical students. AIDA works to achieve equitable health and life outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples by supporting self-determination, growing the Indigenous medical workforce, and advocating for a culturally safe healthcare system. AIDA is a values-driven, member-led organisation guided by integrity, respect, professionalism, excellence, accountability and reciprocity. Through strong governance, cultural leadership and national influence, AIDA plays a critical role in shaping health systems and outcomes across Australia. About the role AIDA is seeking a highly experienced and values-aligned Chief Operating Officer (COO) to report to the Chief Executive Officer and work closely with the Executive, Directors and Board. This is a senior executive leadership role responsible for driving operational excellence across AIDA’s national portfolio of programs and services. The COO provides enterprise-wide operational leadership, ensuring strong systems, processes and capabilities are in place to deliver high-quality outcomes for members, partners and stakeholders. Working in close partnership with the CEO, the COO ensures strategic priorities are translated into effective operational delivery, supports workforce wellbeing, embeds cultural governance across the organisation, and strengthens organisational performance, compliance and sustainability. This role is critical to enabling AIDA’s growth, impact and long-term effectiveness, while ensuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, ways of knowing, being and doing remain central to all aspects of AIDA’s work. About you You are a highly capable and culturally grounded executive leader with strong operational acumen and a collaborative leadership style. You bring experience leading complex organisations or portfolios, with a proven ability to drive performance, manage risk, support teams, and deliver continuous improvement in value-based environments. You are confident working in partnership with a CEO and Board, providing clear operational insight and leadership while supporting strategic ambition. You are committed to cultural safety, Indigenous governance, and community-led approaches, and you lead in a way that is respectful, inclusive and accountable. Commercially and operationally astute, you are comfortable overseeing finance, people and systems through both internal leadership and external service partners, and you thrive in environments requiring agility, clarity and strong relationships. Key Selection Criteria Strong cultural knowledge, community connection and commitment to Indigenous self-determination. Proven senior executive experience in a COO or equivalent role within a community-based, member-focused or value-style-driven organisation. Demonstrated success leading organisational operations, performance, risk, compliance and quality systems in complex environments. Strong people leadership capability, with experience building high-performing, culturally safe and inclusive teams. Proven ability to work strategically and collaboratively with a CEO, Board, Directors and external partners to translate strategy into delivery. High-level communication, influence and executive reporting skills, with a calm, organised and solutions-focused approach.
