ARC Laureate Research/Postdoctoral Fellow Classification: Academic Level A and B Salary package: $87,135 - $134,507 per annum plus 17% superannuation Terms: 3x Full time, Fixed term (up to 5 years) – Academic Level A; 1x Full time, Fixed term (up to 5 years) – Academic Level B Join Professor Hrvoje Tkalčić’s Global & Planetary Seismology Group to advance deep Earth and planetary core science using next-generation seismic imaging and new data. With guaranteed 5-year funding, you will employ seismic wavefield and correlation methods to map Earth’s core, explore its interactions with upper layers, and extend insights to the Moon, Mars, and icy moons—directly supporting scientific institutions, space agencies and industry. Based at the Australian National University in one of the world’s top Earth Sciences schools (#12; QS 2024; QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024), you will lead high-impact publications, mentor PhD students, and build an independent research profile in a collaborative, inclusive environment, fully resourced with global datasets, supercomputing, and field campaigns. As a Laureate Postdoctoral Fellow you will undertake work in all three areas of academic activity—research, education, and service (including outreach). You will contribute cooperatively to the overall intellectual life of the University. Key Responsibilities Design and conduct seismic imaging research to map the Earth's core and its interactions with upper layers. Publish high-impact research findings in leading scientific journals. Mentor PhD students and contribute to graduate training programs. Engage in outreach and service activities, including seminars, peer review, and participation in university committees. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across geodynamics, geomagnetism, mineral physics, and planetary science. Qualifications Hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in seismology, geophysics, computer/data science, or planetary science. Demonstrated expertise in global seismology, particularly related to the Earth's core, core–mantle boundary, or mantle structure. Proficiency in waveform processing, programming (Python, ObsPy, SPECFEM), and forward or inverse modelling. Record of high-quality publications and conference presentations. Experience with machine learning, array seismology, or planetary mission data analysis (e.g., InSight or Apollo) is desirable. Evidence of mentoring, outreach, or interdisciplinary collaboration.
