The filling of this position/these positions is intended to constitute a special/equal opportunity measure under section 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth), and s 12 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic) and s 8(4) of the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (Vic) About the role As a Cultural Firesticks Lead at Yarra Ranges Council, you will champion Indigenous‑led cultural fire management practices that protect Country and strengthen community connections. Working closely with the Indigenous Development Coordinator, Bushlands Team, and the Wurundjeri Narrap Team, you will lead the implementation of the Return of the Firestick project, facilitate cultural burning initiatives, and foster deeper collaboration between Council and the Narrap Ranger Team. In this strategic role, you will also contribute to Reconciliation initiatives and cultural literacy programs, embedding Indigenous perspectives into Council systems, processes, and procedures. As part of the Indigenous Development Team, you will develop and deliver programs that raise awareness of Aboriginal culture and knowledge, improve community health and wellbeing, and advance the Council’s vision for a united community that values the unique culture and role of First Australians. This is a full‑time permanent position (38 hours per week). This is a Band 6 role with a salary range rate between $98,432 and $107,292 per annum, plus superannuation. Experience and skills we’re looking for Strong understanding and practical experience in applying Aboriginal culture and knowledge across diverse work settings. The ability to develop initiatives and learning opportunities to enable a range of stakeholders to embrace concepts of Indigenous practices. The ability to identify Aboriginal community issues and opportunities and work with relevant Council staff to design appropriate responses. Expertise in working within an Indigenous cultural framework, ensuring culturally appropriate approaches in all activities. Proven ability to integrate Indigenous culture and knowledge into projects and initiatives for a variety of stakeholders. The ability to motivate and inspire others at council to seek cultural learning opportunities to enhance and apply new knowledge and skills. Great organisational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate confidently with diverse customers.
