Location: Our Big Kitchen, 36 Flood Street, Bondi NSW 2026, Sydney, Australia Position Type: Volunteer Project-Based (Flexible Short-Term) About Us Our Big Kitchen (OBK) is a kosher‑certified, not‑for‑profit community kitchen based in Bondi. We empower individuals through food, rescue quality produce from landfill, and cook over 250,000 meals annually for people in need. Our vibrant space brings together volunteers from all backgrounds to give back and connect through purpose‑driven work. This following months, we are undertaking a facilities upgrade by converting seven large kitchen cabinet bays (1.7m deep) into smooth‑gliding drawer systems. This improvement will enhance efficiency for our volunteers during cooking events and we need your skilled hands to help us build it The Role We're seeking Volunteer Cabinetry & Carpentry Helpers to support our team in retrofitting deep storage cabinets into functional push‑and‑pull drawer units. Whether you're a trade professional, retired builder, hobbyist woodworker, or simply a skilled helper, your time and craftsmanship will directly support our mission. You'll be working with a team of volunteers and under the guidance of OBK staff or a lead tradesperson. This is a short‑term or one‑off project opportunity, ideal for those who enjoy hands‑on work, teamwork, and community contribution. Key Responsibilities Read and interpret architectural joinery shop drawings Remove internal shelves and prepare cabinet bays for drawer fitting Accurately install drawer runners and locking mechanisms (Layout plan is already available) Cut and assemble drawer boxes and panels with correct spacing and alignment Fit handles, runners, and soft‑close hardware Align and mount drawer faces for a flush, clean finish Assist with workspace setup, clean‑up, and basic tool handling Who We Are Looking For We are seeking volunteers with at least some of the following experience or background: Essential Skill Areas Skilled Carpenter / Cabinet Maker Experience installing full‑extension runners Confident with precise measurements and tight tolerances Ability to interpret cabinetry plans and construction details Furniture Installer / Handyman Familiar with assembling modular furniture or cabinetry Able to use cordless drills, clamps, jigsaws, and hand tools confidently Comfortable mounting drawers into fixed cabinetry Trade Assistant / Handy Helper Willing to assist with lifting, sanding, setup, and basic assembly tasks Able to follow directions and work safely in a busy space Some experience with tools or working around trades preferred General Qualities Experience in carpentry, joinery, furniture making, or a related field Skilled with hand and power tools (drill, level, clamps, etc.) Good physical fitness (some lifting required) Friendly, collaborative, and community‑minded Reliable, punctual, and detail‑oriented Bonus Bonus if you have your own tools (not required) Why Volunteer With Us?
