Sports Turf Curator – Team Leader

Overview We are seeking an experienced Sports Turf Curator – Team Leader to join our team at Victorian Sports Group. Due to continued growth within our company, we currently have new full-time positions available. At Victorian Sports Group we specialise in the construction and maintenance of natural grass & synthetic sporting surfaces. We are based in Doreen and our job sites are across locations in Melbourne & Regional Victoria where you will be working on exciting new projects. The Sports Turf Curator – Team Leader is responsible for overseeing the preparation, maintenance, and management of high-quality sports turf surfaces and associated facilities. This role ensures that all playing surfaces meet professional standards for safety, performance, and presentation. The Team Leader will supervise a small team of grounds staff, coordinate maintenance schedules, and manage resources to deliver exceptional turf conditions year-round for clients throughout Melbourne including high profile Sporting Clubs, Local Councils and Schools. Key Responsibilities Turf Management & Maintenance Plan, schedule, and carry out turf maintenance programs including mowing, irrigation, fertilising, topdressing, aeration, and pest/disease control. Prepare and maintain playing surfaces for a variety of sports (e.g., cricket, football, rugby, athletics) to competition standards. Operate and maintain turf maintenance equipment and machinery safely and efficiently. Monitor turf health and soil conditions, implementing corrective actions as required. Apply turf management best practices to achieve high-quality, sustainable outcomes. Leadership & Team Coordination Supervise and support a team of turf maintenance staff, apprentices, or contractors. Allocate daily work tasks and ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and to specification. Train and mentor staff in turf management techniques and safe equipment operation. Foster a positive team culture, promoting professionalism, safety, and continuous improvement. Facility & Equipment Management Maintain and service turf machinery and irrigation systems according to maintenance schedules. Manage inventory of turf products (seed, fertiliser, chemicals) and ensure accurate record keeping. Ensure all worksites and facilities are clean, tidy, and compliant with safety and environmental standards. Administration & Reporting Assist with budgeting, resource planning, and procurement of turf maintenance materials. Record maintenance activities, chemical applications, and turf performance data. Liaise with sports clubs, event organisers, and management to plan and deliver surface preparation for fixtures and events. Qualifications & Experience Certificate III or IV in Sports Turf Management (or equivalent qualification). Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in sports turf or grounds maintenance, with at least 1–2 years in a supervisory or team leader role. Strong technical knowledge of turfgrass science, irrigation systems, and machinery operation. Current driver’s licence and chemical handling certification (ACUP or equivalent). Skills & Attributes Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Strong organisational and problem-solving abilities. High attention to detail and commitment to producing elite playing surfaces. Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and event days, as required.
