About the role Join our solution-focused team as a Senior Software Engineer in Sydney, Australia. This full-time role offers a supportive environment and growth opportunities. Your duties & responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Software Design & Development : Designing and developing robust, scalable, and maintainable software solutions across multiple projects using modern frameworks and tools. Code Quality & Standards : Conducting thorough code reviews, implementing best practices, and ensuring adherence to high-quality engineering standards. Mentorship & Leadership : Guiding and mentoring junior engineers and interns, fostering a collaborative and learning-focused team culture. System Architecture : Contributing to technical architecture discussions, evaluating technologies, and implementing scalable solutions aligned with business goals. Cross-functional Collaboration : Working closely with product managers, designers, and QA teams to deliver efficient, reliable, and user-centric software products. Experience & Qualifications Proven commercial experience with Ruby on Rails (ideally 3–4+ years) and a solid overall software engineering background (6+ years). Deep understanding of core Rails components: ActiveRecord, ActionController, background jobs (Sidekiq), caching, and API development. Experience with RSpec for unit and integration testing, plus familiarity with factory libraries (Fabricators) and testing best practices. Knowledge of Pundit or similar policy-based authorization frameworks; comfortable implementing secure role- and permission-based controls Solid understanding of PostgreSQL, REST/GraphQL integration, and secure coding practices. Comfortable working across the full software development lifecycle, using Agile/Scrum and modern Git-based workflows. Ability to troubleshoot complex issues, analyse alternatives, and deliver practical solutions. Exposure to cloud environments (Azure) or willingness to learn Azure services used in our transformation. Interest in contributing to a platform modernisation program, helping decouple legacy Rails components and support the transition toward C# services on Azure. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, logs/monitoring tools, and general DevOps practices. Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset, comfortable working in a team undergoing technical uplift. Bachelor's degree in software engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent professional experience. Nice to Haves Experience in the healthcare or mental-health sector, including familiarity with interoperability standards such as FHIR/ HL7, and an understanding of privacy-sensitive data environments. Exposure to AI-assisted development workflows (e.g., Cursor), and comfortable working in a fast, iterative “AI-augmented” engineering environment. Certifications in Azure.
