Join to apply for the Trainee Sonographer L31) role at Department of Health, Tasmania Location: Royal Hobart Hospital, Tasmania The Team The Trainee Sonographer position is part of the Department of Medical Imaging (DMI) at the Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH), the state’s major clinical teaching and research centre. The team provides comprehensive medical imaging services to Southern Tasmania and statewide in some specialties. Within DMI, the Ultrasound Section performs diagnostic ultrasound examinations for all referring medical specialties. The Role The Trainee Sonographer will be trained in ultrasound to provide an effective and efficient ultrasound service for inpatients and outpatients. They will perform ultrasound examinations under supervision, ensuring all clerical aspects of a patient examination are completed accurately and timely. Responsibilities Be trained in ultrasound and provide effective ultrasound service for inpatients and outpatients. Perform ultrasound examinations under supervision of the Senior Specialist Sonographer and the Tutor Sonographer, in accordance with organisational policies and professional codes of conduct. Perform ultrasound examinations and interventional procedures associated with general, paediatric, obstetric, gynaecological, musculoskeletal, emergency and vascular examinations for patients referred to the Medical Imaging Department. Ensure all clerical aspects of a patient examination are completed accurately and in a timely fashion, including entry on the patient information management system, scanning of worksheet and checking of images on PACS. Qualifications Undertake, ideally within a two (2) year period, an Australasian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR) accredited postgraduate ultrasound course. Hold or be eligible to attain current status of “Accredited Student Sonographer” (ASS) with the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry. Registration or licences that are essential requirements of this role must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed. Details of Appointment Fixed term full‑time, shift worker position, working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing 15 December 2025 until 15 December 2027. Hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant. For a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full‑time, part‑time, and casual vacancies. Salary $73,834 to $111,364 per annum. Salary range is in accordance with Allied Health Professionals Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement No. 2 of 2022. Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount. Salary Packaging Access to salary package benefits including living expenses up to $9,010, $2,650 in meal entertainment each FBT year and other benefits if eligible. Allowances A market allowance of 20% of the base salary is applicable to this role. Benefits available to eligible candidates Travel and relocation assistance support up to $15,000 for overseas appointees, and up to $10,000 for interstate appointees. Eligibility Eligible for enrolment for training in diagnostic ultrasound with an accredited university. Completion of a tertiary qualification relevant to the specialist discipline of Ultrasound (desirable).
