The Opportunity The Legal Action Officer plays a pivotal role in the end‑to‑end management of a portfolio of legal recovery matters. The role is required to cure and resolve defaulting loans and mortgages, handle complaints, and commence and manage the legal process. Through proactive engagement, the successful candidate works to resolve matters before escalation, applying a balanced approach that considers both commercial outcomes and customer circumstances. Where legal action becomes necessary, the successful candidate ensures that proceedings are managed efficiently, transparently, and in alignment with the organisation’s values and risk appetite, upholding the highest standards of customer service and ethical conduct. The successful candidate will be a strong critical thinker, resilient, empathetic, with strong conflict resolution, negotiation, and organisational skills. In addition, the individual must have excellent communication skills and be able to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to deliver sustainable outcomes. Key Responsibilities Legal compliance and risk management: Ensure portfolio management complies with relevant legislation, including consumer credit laws, privacy laws, and Debt Collection Guidelines, and internal business policies. Liaise with external legal counsel and regulatory bodies as required. Maintain ethical, fair, and respectful legal action in all circumstances. Resolve escalated complaints and disputes in a timely and professional manner. Collaboration and teamwork: Model actions and behaviours consistent with the organisation’s values. Respond to ad‑hoc requests from the Executive Leadership Team and/or Senior Management. Report on matters and concerns within the portfolio. Operations and reporting: Implement strategies aligned with default management philosophy and minimise reputation and compliance risks. Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure strategies align with broader business goals and arrears targets. Maintain the portfolio spreadsheet and adhere to monthly process reviews. Drive collections activities that achieve solid commercial outcomes and a positive impact on the overall arrears management position. About You Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a similar role, with expertise in mortgages. Strong knowledge of mortgage recoveries processes and relevant legislation (particularly for legal action and possession proceedings). Knowledge of ASIC’s Debt Collection Guidelines, borrower harassment and financial hardship assistance guidelines. Proven industry experience/exposure in legal recovery and dealing with vulnerable and defaulting borrowers. Strong knowledge of relevant legislation and regulatory frameworks including AML awareness, NCCP and Privacy Act. Excellent communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills. High level of integrity, discretion and professionalism. Customer focus – demonstrates empathy and professionalism in all customer interactions while balancing customer needs with business objectives. Analytical thinking – uses data and insights to inform decisions; identifies trends and root causes to improve legal recovery outcomes. Problem solving – approaches challenges with a solutions‑focused mindset; resolves issues efficiently and constructively. Collaboration – works effectively across departments and with external partners; values diverse perspectives and builds strong relationships. Resilience – maintains focus and professionalism under pressure; adapts to change and recovers quickly from setbacks.
