About the role We have an exciting opportunity for a person with a life sciences background to join our dynamic Biotechnology team as a Trainee Patent Attorney, on a full‑time basis in our Sydney office. Responsibilities Meet with inventors to determine the nature of proposed inventions and to form a view as to their patentability. Interpret technical results of the searches and advise clients. Correspond with local clients, individual inventors, overseas patent attorney firms and overseas corporate clients regarding a wide range of intellectual property matters, including: Advising on patentability of inventions. Advising on matters of patent law, including novelty and inventiveness requirements. Preparing responses to Examination Reports. Preparing patent specifications for client inventions, and discussing them with clients, drawing on your expertise in the field of the invention. Conducting infringement and validity analysis. Qualifications Desirable field of expertise – biological sciences, e.g. cell or gene therapy, cancer, vaccines, biochemistry, molecular biology, synthetic biology and plant biotechnology. Post doctoral and/or industry experience would be valued. An excellent command of the English language and the ability to clearly and concisely communicate in writing and verbally. Able to assimilate, critically analyse complex information and think laterally. Well organised and self‑motivated. The ability to prioritise and meet deadlines. A willingness to undertake business development activities, including networking with clients and prospective clients. Prepared to undertake further (part‑time) studies to qualify as an Australian Patent Attorney. Benefits We offer a highly collaborative work environment that supports our team to excellence.
