It leads the public sector in providing advice and support to the Premier and Cabinet in service of the WA community. Core values: Leadership, Connection and Impact. About the Unit The Native Title Act Future Acts Unit provides strategic oversight and leadership of future act matters across the WA public sector. It delivers three key functions: 1) Future Acts Advisory and Negotiation; 2) Future Acts Assessment and Triage; 3) Secretariat and administrative support for relevant committees. The Unit engages directly with native title groups, Aboriginal communities and organizations, and collaborates with other WA Government agencies. About the Role The Principal Legal Officer will assess future act notifications, provide legal services, prepare research, give preliminary legal advice, and advise on policy development. The officer will also determine oversight levels, approvals, engagement strategies and negotiation parameters. Responsibilities Early assessment of future act notifications received by the Unit. Prepare, research and provide preliminary legal advice on Native Title Act future act notifications. Provide legal input to assist in the development of policy. Advising on appropriate level of oversight and approvals. Assist in the development of engagement strategies and negotiation parameters. Qualifications & Experience Degree in Law and admission to practice in the Supreme Court of Western Australia, or qualification as a Legal Practitioner from outside the State with approved admission in Western Australia. Strong experience in identifying legal issues and risks and advising on options for Government and agencies. Demonstrated ability to apply a solutions‑focused and facilitative approach to complex legal and policy issues. Solid knowledge of Native Title and Aboriginal heritage legislation, frameworks and related matters. Two‑page cover letter detailing experience, skills and knowledge relating to legal inter‑frameworks and Native Title law. Proof of identity (100‑point check) and National Police Certificate (issued by Western Australian Police Force within two months). Evidence of Australian citizenship or permanent resident status.
