Position Summary
- To become a member of the Intensive Care trainee pool providing Intensive Care and Retrieval Services (both Pre and Inter-Hospital). Suitable for experienced Intensive Care trainees in their final year of training or post 2nd part CICM seeking to gain further experience and training in Intensive Care and Retrieval Medicine.

Where you'll be working
The John Hunter Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a Level 6 referral centre for critically ill patients in the Hunter New England, Mid North Coast and Northern NSW Local Health Districts. It is the default centre for Trauma, Neurosurgery, Stroke, Vascular, Cardiothoracic and major General Surgery, as well as Interventional Radiology and Neuroradiology. The 796 bed hospital is the main teaching hospital of the University of Newcastle. The hospital contains the only trauma centre in New South Wales outside the Sydney Metropolitan Area and has the busiest Emergency Department in the state. John Hunter is the busiest trauma hospital in the state, and the second busiest in the country.
  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Completion of at least four years residency since graduation with 12 months recent experience in Intensive Care and/or Retrieval Medicine. Hold the Part 1 examination of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM), ANZCA or FACEM. Completed or near completion of the Part 2 examination CICM.
  3. Physical and psychological ability to function competently in the pre-hospital and inter-hospital environments, including helicopter winching and HUET. Ability when rostered on call to be on site within 30 minutes from time of first call.
  4. Demonstrates ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills (at the required level of competency) and judgment and expertise.
  5. Demonstrates teamwork, time management and problem solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary team with a commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  6. Ability to demonstrate sound decision making and awareness of when and who to seek further advice of for the patient. Excellent communication skills with patients, relatives, medical, nursing colleagues, Allied Health, ward staff and administration to ensure the appropriate management of patient
  7. Demonstrated commitment to relevant training program and related medical experience in relevant specialties. Working towards completion of relevant College examinations.
  8. A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with a preparedness and ability to participate in after-hours rosters to deliver patient care in the Intensive Care Services and Hunter Retrieval Services of the John Hunter Hospital
