Our team The Field Operations and Engineering Section (FOES) delivers innovative technical, engineering and field support services and advice across Geoscience Australia land and marine field projects, including priority programmes and mission‑critical activities. The Field Operations Technician role sits within the Applied Science and Operations team in this section and is responsible for contributing high‑level technical advice and functions to field and programme operations of Geoscience Australia. Key duties of the position The role focuses on delivering priority programmes supporting geophysical and geochemical data acquisition. The Field Operations Technician provides expertise to other projects undertaken across Geoscience Australia, including assistance to international partners. The role requires field‑work activities and work at the Geoscience Australia headquarters. This role is based in Canberra and works closely with key internal and external stakeholders, requiring a high level of communication skills to report and manage technical issues, deliver mission‑critical activities and support stakeholders and clients. In this role you will Provide expert functions and advice on operational field matters across land and marine field programmes. Engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely delivery of field programmes and represent the agency professionally. Advise and improve safety processes and documentation for the team and broader stakeholders. Maintain and develop technical knowledge of scientific instruments and data collection systems, focusing on geophysics and geochemistry. Coordinate the use of specialist service providers, including contractors and consultants. Provide innovative solutions to modernise and improve field logistics, including specialised freight requirements for national and international regions. Carry out physically demanding work, including in extreme weather environments. Undertake procurement within PGPA guidelines. Support the Applied Science and Operations manager and contribute as a proactive member of a high‑performing multidisciplinary team. Demonstrate ability in stakeholder/client engagement and communicate advice and messages clearly. Work independently, collaboratively and effectively as a member of a highly skilled technical team. Desirable skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications Experience working in marine and land field environments with a focus on operational and logistical support requirements. Experience working with scientific instrumentation. Ability to undertake regular travel to remote field sites for periods of up to three weeks in Australia. Possess strong leadership and management skills that support a diverse workforce while setting team priorities.
