About OzHarvest OzHarvest, Australia's leading food rescue organisation, collects and redistributes tonnes of excess food each day to local charities across the country. The service is free of charge to donors and recipients, helping vulnerable communities and protecting the environment. Role Overview Volunteer Food Rescue Assistants ride in the passenger seat of refrigerated vehicles and help drivers collect, load, and distribute surplus food to charities. The role is physically demanding, requires frequent lifting of crates, and aims to support the food collection journey from donor to recipient. Responsibilities Assist the driver in collecting food from supermarkets, bakeries, wholesalers and caterers. Follow Food Safety and Manual Handling Guidelines while weighing and loading food into the van. Log details of volume and type of food collected in a mobile phone app. Unload and distribute food to recipient agencies. Liaise with food donors, recipient charities and fellow volunteers. Represent OzHarvest positively to donors, charity staff and the public. Participate in additional volunteering activities such as community events, market stalls, fundraising, and education roles. Qualifications Strong communication skills. Reasonable physical fitness; ability to lift approximately 15 kg crates repeatedly. Reliability and commitment to a regular shift. Willingness to complete online Manual Handling and Safe Food Handling modules and to learn the food collection phone app. Team‑oriented approach and positive, flexible, can‑do attitude. Strong interpersonal skills and understanding of the sensitive issues faced by vulnerable people. Availability for 7‑8 hour weekday shifts during business hours.
