Senior Engineer, Development

Position Overview Reporting to the Manager, Project Development, you'll drive the technical development of utility‑scale BESS, utility‑scale solar, datacentre power infrastructure, and heavy fleet electrification projects from early concept through to construction readiness. Your work will span the full development spectrum, from early‑stage techno‑commercial feasibility and grid capacity assessments that inform origination decisions, through to acting as lead technical consultant for tier 1 developers where you'll coordinate specialist consultants, develop procurement strategies, engage directly with a wide range of OEMs, develop preliminary engineering drawings, and provide owner’s engineer oversight. This is a varied role where your electrical engineering expertise directly determines whether projects are technically feasible, commercially viable, and constructible. You'll solve complex design challenges while ensuring solutions work in real‑world conditions, balancing grid constraints, equipment capabilities, cost targets, and delivery timelines. The breadth of exposure means rapid learning alongside experienced development and advisory leaders who are building some of Australia’s most significant energy infrastructure projects. What You’ll Do Techno‑Commercial Feasibility & Origination Support: Lead early‑stage feasibility studies for utility‑scale BESS, datacentre power infrastructure, and heavy fleet electrification projects. Develop preliminary designs, conduct grid capacity assessments, evaluate site suitability, and deliver technical analysis that informs origination decisions and determines whether development opportunities are worth pursuing. Development Project Management: Support planning, execution, and delivery of development projects from concept through to construction readiness. Coordinate technical workstreams, manage consultant performance, track progress against milestones, and ensure projects meet quality standards and timelines. Procurement Strategy Development: Develop procurement strategies for major equipment packages including BESS, inverters, transformers, and balance of plant. Define technical specifications, evaluate supplier capabilities, and provide commercial input on equipment selection that balances performance, cost, and delivery risk. Research & Market Analysis: Lead research and analysis on emerging technologies, market trends, and regulatory developments across energy storage, datacentres, and electrification sectors. Identify strategic opportunities for new project types, technology applications, and service offerings that position Volta at the forefront of development activity. Client & Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with developers, utilities, DNSPs, equipment suppliers, and regulatory authorities. Collaborate with stakeholders to understand requirements, manage expectations, and deliver technical solutions that support successful project outcomes and client satisfaction. Deliverable Development & Mentoring: Own creation and finalisation of technical reports, feasibility studies, design documentation, and investment presentations that meet client expectations and support financing decisions. Mentor junior engineers in technical analysis and report preparation, building team capability and ensuring consistent quality. About You You're a qualified engineer (electrical engineering preferred) who's ready to join a fast‑growing, high‑performing team where no two days are the same. You're motivated by variety and impact, equally comfortable conducting detailed technical analysis one day and coordinating stakeholders on a complex development project the next. You thrive when switching between multiple tasks, rolling your sleeves up to solve problems, and learning rapidly through exposure to challenging work alongside experienced professionals. You’ll also bring: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline (Electrical Engineering preferred) Minimum 3 years’ experience in renewable energy project development, feasibility studies, or consulting roles Demonstrated experience with utility‑scale BESS and/or hybrid renewable energy systems Strong technical capabilities in electrical systems design, implementation, and optimisation Demonstrated experience in preparing high‑quality technical reports and documentation A proactive, detail‑oriented mindset with a commitment to safety, compliance, and engineering excellence Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with clients, project teams, and stakeholders Check out our website to find out why Volta is a great place to work: No Recruitment Agencies #J-18808-Ljbffr
