Data Engineer – Azure, Databricks, SQL

Are you a Senior Data Engineer who enjoys hands‑on problem‑solving, building robust data pipelines, and delivering meaningful analytics outcomes? This 6-month contract is an excellent opportunity to join a high‑performing BI and Data team within a major Government Department, supporting large‑scale data, reporting and workforce initiatives. As the Principal Data Engineer, you’ll play a critical role in designing, building and optimising end‑to‑end data pipelines using Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks and SQL. You’ll work closely with internal stakeholders to maintain, enhance and scale data models used across the organisation for reporting, analytics and forward‑planning. This is a role for someone technically strong, delivery‑focused, and comfortable working in a fast‑paced environment where priorities shift and urgent requests arise. You’ll join a collaborative team that values strong communication, clean engineering practices and continuous improvement. What you’ll be doing Designing, building and maintaining scalable data pipelines using Azure Data Factory and Databricks Developing high‑quality data models, ETL/ELT processes and analytics solutions Performing hands‑on coding, debugging and optimisation across large, complex datasets Identifying discrepancies and performance issues across data systems, and implementing improvements Automating manual processes to increase efficiency and reliability Supporting urgent data requests and collaborating across multiple internal teams Translating technical concepts into clear, meaningful insights for non‑technical audiences About you You bring strong technical engineering capability and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. You must have: Strong experience with Azure Data Factory and SQL Proven ability to build and optimise scalable data pipelines and models Strong communication skills and the ability to adapt to shifting priorities A collaborative, solution‑focused mindset You’ll contribute to impactful government‑wide projects, work with a passionate BI team, and support initiatives that improve data capability and outcomes across the department.
