Position Overview The Senior Design Manager oversees comprehensive design aspects of construction projects, ensuring seamless integration of design processes from initial planning to project completion. The role guiding and coordinating design teams, offering expertise on build feasibility, and aligning design choices with project objectives. It emphasises strong upfront capabilities, including Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) experience, to identify value for clients and lead the process in collaboration with consultants, authorities, the Project Team, and Estimators. Responsibilities Manage the design process from pre‑planning through construction, ensuring designs meet project goals and client requirements throughout. Provide guidance on design implications and build feasibility issues. Offer recommendations concerning value management and project specifications, aligning specs with objectives and minimising costs. Ensure consistent application of design processes across projects, implementing standardised methodologies. Contribute to developing an adaptable Design Management Plan tailored to project requirements. Address inquiries and manage stakeholder communications promptly and professionally. Participate in workshops with the project team, actively contributing ideas to enhance the design process. Lead or engage in meetings, preparing necessary documents and distributing relevant materials for effective communication. Provide advice on legislative compliance and the latest design standards, ensuring designs adhere to regulations. Incorporate Hickory’s guidelines and best practices, including the Hickory Way®, into design documents. Ensure compliance with Occupational Health, Safety & Environmental standards. Complete Health Safety and Environment requirements, including monitoring design change checklists and risk assessments. Provide risk assessments and manage commercial risks in design outputs to minimise negative impact. Maintain design brief within cost restraints, avoiding unnecessary expenses. Ensure all design output meets quality standards and specifications set by Hickory and its clients. Implement sustainable design practices, integrating environmental and sustainability standards into the design process. Supervise the adoption of innovative technologies and software for design processes to enhance efficiency and quality. Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with clients. Continuously review and refine internal design processes to enhance efficiency and reduce redundancy. Address conflicts or issues promptly, working with teams to find effective solutions. Stay updated on new design technologies and industry trends to incorporate innovative methods. Oversee comprehensive documentation of the design process, generating reports and documentation for stakeholders. Lead and coordinate on‑site design detailing and resolve design issues with the delivery team. Provide procurement advice around scope requirements and technical advice to support project needs. To Be Successful in the Role Bachelor of Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Project Management or equivalent. 5 years of experience in Design Management for commercial construction projects. Proven leadership and team management skills. Strong knowledge of regulatory compliance and design standards. Experience in managing design budgets effectively, optimising resources and making strategic decisions to ensure design excellence within budget constraints. Track record of integrating innovative design concepts and leveraging cutting‑edge technology tools to enhance the design process. Experience in Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) processes to find value for clients and lead collaboration among consultants, authorities, and project stakeholders.
