The town offers ease of access to Sydney via a 1-hour flight or a 3-hour drive to Canberra, a 4-hour and 30-minute drive to Sydney. The town is located halfway between the busy cities of Melbourne and Brisbane, right on the Newell Highway. Boasting the benefits of country living with space to breathe and affordable real estate. Young families and couples may also benefit from the large demand for work in mining, construction, health, transport and the thriving agricultural base.As the Trade Assistant / Health Safety and Environment (HSE) Advisor, your role will be to support scientific research in a diverse range of laboratory, workshop and field situations across a range of different astronomy research projects. This may include applying repair skills to mechanical and electrical systems and machines. Supporting the team with mechanical, electrical, and electronics tasks.

The position has a significant role (40%) in supporting the site’s HSE function with the support of off-site HSE team partners. You will be responsible for delivering HSE services by providing tailored technical and specialist HSE advice and supporting the continuous improvement of the site’s preventative safety, compliance and HSE system management.You will also work with the central CSIRO HSE function in developing and delivering strategic HSE and wellbeing programs to enhance CSIRO’s HSE and wellbeing culture, focusing on the site-specific requirements.Please note, occasional travel to other CSIRO sites may be required for coverage and additional Mechanical and HSE support.Your duties will include:

Undertake routine maintenance tasks such as lubrication, oil and grease sampling, and service inspections and fault-finding support for various mechanical systems.Keep accurate maintenance logs, markup engineering drawings and update documentation.Maintain stores and assets system, workshop and machine shop in good order.Repair and fabricate jigs and machines to support the maintenance and operation of the Telescopes and other on-site assets.Assist in identifying and implementing improved preventive maintenance routines and safe work procedures.Assist in a range of site activities such as receiver changes and interact and co-operate with other staff to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the observatory systems and site.Support the implementation of CSIRO’s HSE plan, with a focus on organisational consistency across sites.Support the overall HSE culture of the Parkes site and provide subject matter expert advice to on-site staff.Contribute to HSE projects and positively challenge the status quo to influence continual HSE improvement across the site.Develop and maintain strong relationships with site work groups, understand their unique HSE needs and make recommendations to guide management decisions.Contribute to a cohesive, collaborative, and innovative HSE team, provide hands-on HSE practical support to operational staff and liaise with the HSE team.Coach and educate staff through knowledge sharing and utilising best practices to enhance the overall HSE performance.Endorse HSE culture and lead by example, acknowledging and promoting behaviours to enable a positive and proactive HSE culture across the business.Develop and review policies, procedures, and systems and make recommendations.Location:

A valid manual class C driver’s license.An

NSW White Card.Experience in mechanical or electrical trades, including some fabrication.Demonstrated industrial experience in the maintenance and operation of mechanical and electrical systems.Demonstrated experience in fault finding and diagnosis of mechanical systems, including interpretation of civil, mechanical and electrical drawings.Relevant work experience operating in a HSE function and/or as a safety officer.Strong interpersonal skills, fostering collaboration, building trust, facilitating consensus. Proficient in written and verbal communication, adept with computer software for correspondence and documentation updates.Certificate or formal qualification in Health, Safety and Environment or prepared to obtain one once employed.Ability to interpret legislation and regulatory standards to identify problems and appropriately respond to issues and exposure to HSE hazard management.Have a First Aid Certificate or be prepared to obtain one once employed.Working at Heights certificate and Heights Rescue Training certificate.Licenses desirable to have or willing to work towards once employed:
