Software Engineer - Engine by Starling Starling Bank is the UK's leading digital bank. Engine by Starling is its SaaS business offering a technology platform to banks worldwide. Engine engineers work on challenging backend problems, building new features from scratch and maintaining existing ones for global banking clients. Responsibilities Contribute to our award‑winning platform and internal tooling. Build new features and products from scratch in a configurable way. Share your knowledge with colleagues, contributing to our learning culture. Own your projects, working in small teams across the bank to collaboratively deliver. Aim for greatness in everything you do, staying curious and inquisitive. Be part of a scaling team and organisation as we change banking for good. Requirements Aptitude and attitude are more important than specific experience; we are open‑minded about hiring. Experience or willingness to work with Java (our primary language). Basic understanding of cloud platforms – AWS and/or GCP. Knowledge of microservice architecture. Familiarity with Kubernetes (EKS) and CI/CD pipelines (TeamCity, Terraform, Grafana). Interview Process Initial phone call – 45 minutes. Take‑home technical test to be discussed during the technical interview. Technical interview – 1.5 hours. Final interview – 45 minutes, likely face‑to‑face in Sydney. Benefits 25 days holiday (plus birthday holiday). Option to opt‑out of public holidays. Option to buy/sell up to 5 days of annual leave per year. 16 hours paid volunteering time per year. Enhanced Paternity/Maternity leave. Perkbox access.
