Staff Nurse/Operating Department Practitioner – Neurosurgery Closing date: 23 December 2025 This role is eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker route; sponsorship is only available to candidates who meet UKVI requirements, including the relevant skill and salary thresholds (£25,000), and other role‑specific criteria. We were awarded Clinical Team of the Year 2024 at the recent UHSussex Star Awards. Our Neurosciences services are housed under one roof in the Louisa Martindale Building, one of the newest clinical buildings in NHS England. We are seeking highly motivated individuals to support the Neurosciences Service – Recovery, Scrub, Anaesthetics and the delivery of Polytrauma Service – at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. Experience in an acute setting is desirable, but service training will be provided. We accept applications from Nurse/ODP students in their final year of training in the UK. We welcome applications from those who hold a UK NMC registration. If you hold an overseas nursing qualification and require sponsorship, we are not hiring internationally qualified nurses directly. Main duties of the job Provide clinical support and teaching to all relevant personnel within the specialist area. Provide information and support to patients having anaesthesia/surgery. Assist with the development of safe and high-quality specialist patient care and work within the Trust Nursing & Midwifery Strategy guidelines. Work an internal rotation shift pattern to provide 24/7 cover for the Neurosurgery and Polytrauma Service at Brighton and participate in the on‑call rota. Complete an orientation period to the clinical area in accordance with the Trust’s induction programme and receive ongoing professional development support. Job responsibilities Management / Organisational Maintain accurate records and information systems. Safely control, custody, and administer all drugs within the peri‑operative area in accordance with Trust policies and national legislation. Assist the Team Leader to ensure patient care reflects the departmental philosophy. Respect patients’ customs, values, and spiritual beliefs, ensuring equal opportunities are practised. Report any change in circumstance that may affect safe and competent practice to Team Leader/Clinical Theatre Manager. Contribute to the development of specialised areas within pre‑ and post‑operative services. Ensure self and others attend mandatory training sessions as required. Use relevant IT and keyboard skills to enable electronic data collection and communication. Communicate effectively with all disciplines, patients/clients, and relatives. Record and act on incident reports and inform the manager accordingly. Manage the team under pressure, including emergency situations, when senior staff are absent. Maintain security of the working area. Ensure a safe working environment for staff, patients, and visitors, in line with the Health and Safety at Work Act. Attend routine departmental meetings. Maintain adequate stock levels of consumables and order equipment and supplies as delegated. Utilise theatre session time efficiently to keep lists on time and minimise delays. In the absence of senior staff, manage the safe and efficient running of Neuro Theatre lists. Clinical Participate in setting, monitoring, and evaluating standards of care for patients with other clinical staff. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care within the pre‑ and post‑operative care plan. Provide specialist, technical, and clinical information to patients and colleagues in the pre‑ and post‑operative setting. Demonstrate effective management, interpersonal, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills in complex clinical situations. Maintain awareness of changing trends in pre‑ and post‑operative practice and develop the necessary skills. Show specialist knowledge supported by theoretical or practical experience. Manage an unpredictable workload and deal with traumatic and emotional situations. Demonstrate high standards of skill in pre‑operative and post‑operative areas. Ensure the multidisciplinary team maintains documentation and utilises information within the specialist peri‑operative care pathway. Apply current manual‑handling policies and procedures. Follow departmental infection‑control guidelines and maintain a clean environment. Keep knowledge of maintenance and checking procedures of specialist equipment up to date. Person Specification Qualifications NMC/HCPC registration. RGN Anaesthetic qualification (if practising anaesthetics) or Diploma in Operating Department Practice. Knowledge and Experience Interest in pre‑ and post‑operative practice and willingness to develop skills in all areas of peri‑operative care. Ability to organise self and others effectively. Ability to work in a fast‑paced neurosurgical theatre environment. Experience in a critical care/peri‑operative setting. Experience in anaesthetic, scrub, recovery, HDU, or neurosurgery roles.
