The Australian Passport Office (APO) is seeking a Director to lead the Learning and Development Section (PLS).

The APO provides Australians access to secure international travel documentation through timely and responsive passport services. The APO manages each stage of the passport production process including passport application lodgement, application assessment, and passport printing. The APO also includes teams focussed on, for example, service recovery (complaints and feedback), policy and legislation, data and workload management, complex decision making and support for staff learning and development.

The APO issues passports to Australian citizens, both in Australia and overseas, under the Australian Passports Act 2005, related laws, and the Convention on International Civil Aviation. We also issue other types of travel documents, for example, Convention Travel Documents, to eligible non-citizens living in Australia. Within Australia, APO staff are also authorised to provide services such as the issuing of Certificates of no Impediment to Marriage (CNI) and legalisations of documents (Apostilles and Authentications).

This is a great opportunity for someone to lead a high performing team within a dynamic working environment. The work is interesting, challenging and varied, as PLS provides learning programs to staff across the APO’s national network and to staff undertaking passport functions at overseas Posts.

Travel to APO State and Territory Offices will be required.

This recruitment process will be used to fill current vacancies as well as vacancies which may arise over the coming 18 months.

Our ideal candidate

We are seeking an experienced, motivated, and dynamic EL2 to lead APO’s learning and development function through developing, co-ordinating, and evaluating training needs and activities. Our work focuses on design, development, and delivery of technical, leadership, behavioural and customer service training in consultation with stakeholders.

To lead our high performing section, we are looking for candidates who have:

Learning and development experience will be considered highly desirable.

The key duties of the position include:

The Learning and Development Section (PLS) is responsible for managing the learning and development needs of the Australian Passport Office (APO). PLS is seeking a motivated and professional individual to actively lead the section in the development and delivery of training activities that align with the department’s learning and development priorities.

The successful candidate will be required to perform the following duties:

Work closely with senior management, APO HR and the network’s workforce planning portfolio to ensure that APO learning and development is aligned with workforce management, coaching, career pathways and unscheduled absence management goals.Liaise and engage with external training providers and DFAT’s Diplomatic Academy to support and coordinate relevant APO training programs.Contribute to new training strategy and drive development of training content and materials through stakeholder liaison with representatives across the APO’s national network.Provide strategic direction and advice in an agile environment that meets the development needs of the network.Anticipate and establish PLS priorities, monitor outcomes and identify gaps and opportunities for learning and development within the APO.Engage in continuous improvement, identifying and implementing effective training delivery methods across the global DFAT network.Oversee proactive review and update of training material to drive the continual improvement and currency of PLS training curriculum.Manage challenging group interactions, be able to respond and adapt in a fast-paced ever-changing environment.
