To find out more about headspace visit Part Time: 3 days a week POSITION SUMMARY Peer Support Workers at headspace Cannington use their lived experience of mental health challenges to provide compassionate, recovery-oriented support to young people and their families. Peer Support Workers deliver meaningful peer-based services that foster hope, self-advocacy, and social connection, all within a framework of mutual understanding, respect, and cultural safety. Working alongside clinical staff, Peer Support Workers contribute to group programmes, community engagement, and peer‑led initiatives, champion strengths-based recovery and support the broader vision of headspace and Arche Health. This is a part‑time position, and an attractive salary will be offered to the successful applicant dependent on skills/experience and includes access to salary packaging at full ATO Health Promotion Charity exemption and superannuation at 12%. PRIMARY DUTIES Key Responsibilities Provide one-to-one and group peer support for young people and their allies using personal mental health experience to model hope and recovery. Assist in embedding peer work practice principles in the headspace team. Coordinate and deliver headspace programmes and initiatives aimed at educating and engaging young people accessing headspace care. Provide an alternative entry point to headspace services for young people, particularly those who are socially isolated, LGBTIQA+ or those who have neurodevelopmental considerations where digital service models may support engagement. Offer empathic listening and provide support and information to young people attending headspace. This may be face‑to‑face, by telephone or using video conferencing platforms. Support community engagement activities and headspace service pathways to increase awareness of digital health service offerings including eheadspace and MOST. Work with young people in a non‑clinical way that values the shared experiences of a peer and supports the young person to appropriately engage with headspace. Support young people with a diverse range of needs including culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) young people, LGBTIQA+ young people, First Nations young people and young people with a disability. Includes being sensitive to cultural norms and engaging interpreter services where appropriate. Facilitate or co‑facilitate programmes within the headspace centre for young people. Contribute to the review and further development of headspace programmes and education packages as necessary. Work with the headspace team on projects and initiatives related to this role. Promote the headspace programme, communicate regularly with, build and maintain collaborative working relationships with health and welfare agencies and the general community. The role may incorporate other service development activities and responsibilities as reasonably directed by the Centre Manager. Support cultural capability and inclusivity practices aligned with national standards. Model the Organisation’s values, play a role in raising the profile of these values and associated behaviours across the organisation including a positive contribution to workplace harmony and displaying cooperative team behaviour. Proactively communicate, identify, report, assess Work Health & Safety related risks and hazards within the centre. Demonstrate commitment to the objectives of the team, centre and organisation and show commitment in achieving work and organisational goals. Identify, develop, support and/or implement new initiatives and improvement activities as part of the Centre’s continuous quality improvement process. Engage in training and development as required. SELECTION CRITERIA Qualifications and Registrations Experience in the planning and provision of community engagement and understanding of the recovery process and ability to communicate a lived experience of recovery. Skills in public speaking and/or facilitating training. Experience and Knowledge Have a lived experience of mental health challenges. Demonstrated experience coordinating and facilitating activities to engage young people. Demonstrated experience in effectively working within a team. Knowledge of trauma‑informed practice principles. Practical knowledge of the issues relating to young people, in terms of accessing treatment services and in supporting recovery. Awareness of the integral role of General Practice and Local Health Networks in the assessment, treatment and referral for young people. An understanding of ethics and confidentiality issues, particularly in relation to the health and medical professions. An understanding of and commitment to the principles of multiculturalism, equal opportunity and the legislative requirements of the WH&S Act. An understanding of cultural issues in working with minority groups of people including First Nations, LGBTIQA+ and CALD communities. Skills and Abilities Capacity to relate to young people from a perspective of having a lived experience of mental health challenges, seeking help and recovery. Ability to provide empathetic support and to facilitate hope for the future. Ability to establish relationships and maintain appropriate boundaries with young people. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to interact in an engaged, culturally aware, trauma-informed and inclusive manner within working relationships. Ability to manage wellbeing while working, including identifying strategies for self‑care and maintaining personal wellness. Able to be self‑motivated, enthusiastic and energetic and adapt readily to change. Capacity to contribute to a team culture of openness, practice sharing and curiosity and continuous improvement. Excellent computing and keyboard skills, including proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to prioritise tasks, set objectives, meet deadlines in a timely manner, and complete tasks to a professional standard. A growth‑mindset: a commitment ongoing learning and improving practice. Capacity to advocate for marginalised populations, address barriers and engage flexibility with LGBTQIA+, ATSI and CALD people. Willingness to work with marginalised populations such as First Nations, diverse cultures and young people to address their mental health issues in a holistic context. Ability to exercise initiative and to seek guidance to make sound decisions.
