Job Description About the Role We are seeking a Cultural Engagement Advisor to provide culturally informed leadership, advice, and support to enhance Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement across IHM. This role plays a key part in fostering culturally safe learning and working environments, strengthening relationships with Indigenous communities, and supporting Indigenous students to succeed. Working collaboratively with academic teams, student services, and senior leadership, the Cultural Engagement Advisor contributes to the embedding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into institutional policies, programs, curriculum, and student support services. The role also supports the development and implementation of IHM’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) . Duties & Responsibilities Provide culturally appropriate support, guidance, and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Facilitate referrals to internal and external support services to promote student wellbeing and success. Build and maintain respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, Elders, and organisations. Act as a key liaison between IHM and Indigenous stakeholders. Provide cultural advice to staff and leadership to support culturally safe practices across the Institute. Contribute to cultural awareness and capability-building initiatives. Support the development, implementation, and monitoring of IHM’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). Contribute to Indigenous-related policies, projects, reporting, and quality assurance activities. Participate in relevant committees and working groups as required. Attend IHM meetings and professional development activities as required. Desired Skills and Experience Must identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander (This is a genuine occupational requirement under the Equal Opportunity Act). Relevant qualification in Indigenous studies, community development, education, social sciences, or equivalent demonstrated experience. Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Experience supporting Indigenous students or programs in education, community, or public sector settings.n Demonstrated ability to provide cultural advice and engage effectively with diverse stakeholders. Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills. Sound knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, and contemporary issues. Understanding of cultural safety principles and self-determination. Well‑developed administrative, reporting, and digital skills (Microsoft Office and related systems). Understanding of higher education environments and equity frameworks (desirable). Ability to obtain a National Police Check and Working with Children Check (or willingness to apply).
