Overview New role - Principal SRE - software engineering background - Java, Big Query, BigTable, Spanner, GCP - circa $220-260k + super + bonus - Sydney The core technical challenge is around design resiliency and distributed system architecture. They've got critical banking services built on legacy infrastructure (mainframes, Cassandra, IAM) that are blocking teams from moving forward, alongside modern microservices on Java Spring Boot (Java 17, exploring 21/25), BigQuery, BigTable, and Spanner. The problem isn't scale, it's complexity. Think convoluted authentication flows across multiple systems, end-to-end design issues, and teams that need uplifting on NFRs like failure scenarios, scalability, and proper testing strategies. One thing worth mentioning is they're very pro-AI. Every director has gone through AI certification, and they're integrating it across systems and tooling, so you'd need to be pragmatic about leveraging it, not skeptical. Thanks for reading. Responsibilities Rewrite legacy services quickly while institutionalising solutions through reusable libraries and SDKs. Make low-level architecture decisions and set engineering standards through PR reviews. Drive technical initiatives end-to-end or lead by deep technical example. Address complex authentication flows, failure scenarios, scalability, and testing strategies across multiple systems. Qualifications Software engineering background with experience on large distributed systems. Transitioned into Site Reliability Engineering. Proficient in Java (Spring Boot, Java 17/21/25), BigQuery, BigTable, Spanner, GCP. Experience with legacy infrastructure (mainframes, Cassandra, IAM) and modern microservices. Understanding of NFRs (failure, scalability, testing). Pragmatic approach to AI integration across systems and tooling.
