Aboriginal Cultural Advisor – Shellharbour City Council Play a vital role in strengthening cultural awareness, inclusion and reconciliation across Shellharbour City. Responsibilities Building strong and positive relationships with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, stakeholders and non-Indigenous stakeholders. Contributing to improved social justice outcomes for the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Assisting Council to develop, implement and evaluate strategies, policies and initiatives that address identified needs of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and enhance reconciliation throughout Shellharbour. Providing advice on outcomes and impacts to local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Qualifications / Requirements Strong and effective knowledge of and relationships with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Effective advocacy for both community and Council. Ability to prepare and contribute to key strategic documents and outcomes. National Police History Check clearance and a current “Working with Children Check” clearance in accordance with the Child Protection (WWC) Act 2012 for paid workers. The Council has a long history of working towards reconciliation within our city, with achievements including a 1997 Statement of Commitment to Aboriginal Australians; the formation of the Shellharbour Aboriginal Advisory Committee in 1998; the opening of Yirran Muru (Many Pathways) Aboriginal interpretive playspace in 2023; and the adoption of our first Reconciliation Action Plan in 2023. Located in the Illawarra region on Dharawal Country, just 80 minutes south of Sydney, Shellharbour City spans 154 square kilometres and is home to over 82,000 people. It is an area of great natural and cultural richness. We Offer Permanent full-time, 35 hours per week with access to flexi-time and hybrid work options. Commencing salary range from $89,321 – $94,788 per annum. 12% superannuation. Great culture with a strong, values-led and progressive team.
