Postdoctoral Research Fellow – Level A University of Adelaide, Waite Campus – Full Time, research‑focused position. Salary: $78,544 to $105,611 per annum plus 17% superannuation. Overview The Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) is a U.S. Department of Energy bioenergy research centre. As a U.S. partner, the University of Adelaide contributes to world‑leading research on advanced biofuels and biomaterials. The successful candidate will work within the JBEI team in Adelaide and in close collaboration with the Emeryville, California team. Key Responsibilities Identify and characterise genes responsible for plant cell wall biosynthesis and redesign the wall for improved function. Develop null mutants in candidate genes via tissue culture and gene editing in Arabidopsis. Use HPAEC‑PAD, PACE and MALDI to characterise cell wall composition and structure, focusing on pectin and rhamnogalacturonan‑II (RG‑II). Perform heterologous expression of proteins and characterize enzyme activity using microscale thermophoresis. Co‑supervise PhD and Honours students. Deliver outputs including novel gene characterisation, improved RG‑II analysis methods, and insights into cell wall assembly and function. Required Qualifications and Experience Completed (or nearly completed) PhD in Plant Sciences, Plant Molecular Biology, Plant Synthetic Biology, Plant Biochemistry or related subject. Demonstrated skills in plant molecular biology and biochemistry, including plant transformation and tissue culture. Strong understanding of cell wall biology. Fluency in written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate scientific ideas to an expert audience. Strong work ethic and ability to work independently and as part of a broader team, including with industrial partners. Ability to travel overseas and attend out‑of‑hours meetings with U.S.–based team members. Commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion. Understanding of bioinformatics.
