Power Systems Engineer

Overview The energy system is undergoing a quiet but fundamental shift. The rise of large DC‑native loads such as electric vehicles and data centres is triggering a refocus on DC grids (remember Tesla vs Edison?). DC microgrids eliminate unnecessary AC‑to‑DC conversions, minimise impacts on the grid and speed up deployment timelines. DC3 is a new company developing DC microgrid solutions for heavy vehicle charging infrastructure. We are a vendor‑agnostic system integrator, focusing on DC‑coupled EV charging, battery storage and solar. We are backed by Volta Ventures and are the first Australian member of the Current/OS Foundation. The Role We are looking for an engineer to support our demonstration projects as we move to commercial deployment in 2026. You will be capable of working autonomously across different areas, including power system design, controls, testing and vendor liaison. The right candidate will have a clear path to technical leadership as we scale. This is a hands‑on role within a small team. You will spend significant time at project sites rather than in a traditional office. You will work directly to make hardware work safely and effectively, shaping how our systems are built. You will be supported by the founders and Managing Director, and a network of trusted partners. What You'll Do Program and commission our microgrid controller with our software partner Take ownership of a MATLAB Simulink model developed by our research partner, and adapt it as our systems evolve Develop a first‑principles understanding of how our power electronics devices work individually and as a system, including in various normal and abnormal operating modes Conduct hands‑on testing with appropriate attention to safety and risk management Provide technical input on component sourcing, test equipment, supplier evaluation Liaise with component vendors as required Communicate quickly and clearly to leadership to flag issues and suggest ideas for improvement What We're Looking For Degree in electrical or power electronics engineering, or equivalent practical experience Understanding of power converters, battery systems and/or EV chargers – product development experience is not expected, however you are expected to understand control loops and communication protocols Familiarity with electrical protection schemes Familiarity with industrial controls or embedded systems Ability to code in Python Ability to modify and validate a MATLAB/Simulink model – you will not be expected to develop the model from scratch Experience with testing and commissioning at up to 1500 VDC will be valued highly Ability to speak Mandarin to vendors is beneficial but not essential Strong documentation and version control habits (GitHub, Notion, etc) Hours and Location Business hours testing schedule Working most days on site at our warehouse and project locations (all within south‑eastern Melbourne currently) Minimal travel expected outside of the above Candidate is expected to have their own vehicle for commuting to work locations Working Rights Existing working rights in Australia preferred, however we will consider a visa sponsorship for the right candidate.
