Head of Engineering Base pay range: A$180,000.00/yr - A$210,000.00/yr We’re partnering with a Sydney‑based software consultancy that delivers high‑impact projects for startups and established brands alike. About the role This is a senior leadership opportunity within a digital consultancy that designs and delivers complex, scalable software products for a range of clients. As Head of Engineering , you will define the technical direction of the organisation, oversee delivery across multiple engagements, and develop leaders within the engineering team. You will work closely with design, product, and client partners to ensure outcomes are scalable, secure, reliable, and commercially sound. The role suits someone who enjoys complex problem‑solving and also values mentorship, communication, and thoughtful leadership. To succeed you should have strong hands‑on experience with modern application frameworks and cloud platforms, particularly React, Next.js, React Native, Node.js, GraphQL, and at least one major cloud provider such as AWS, GCP or Azure. What you’ll do: Leadership, Strategy and Culture Set and own the technical vision and engineering roadmap that aligns with business goals. Partner closely with leadership to scale team capability, processes, and platform maturity. Mentor and develop Tech Leads and senior engineers to strengthen leadership and technical decision‑making. Shape hiring, onboarding, and career progression frameworks to build a high‑performing and motivated engineering team. Foster a culture that values engineering excellence, collaboration, continuous learning, and accountability. Embody and promote core company values, turning complex challenges into clear, effective outcomes. Delivery, Execution and Client Engagement Oversee delivery across diverse projects leveraging React, Next.js, React Native, Node.js, GraphQL, and major cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure). Drive best practices in code quality, security, performance, and CI/CD processes to ensure consistent excellence. Act as the technical escalation point for architecture and performance challenges. Collaborate with senior leadership and clients during pre‑sales to design technical solutions that meet business objectives. Lead technical scoping, proposal development, and client workshops, translating complex requirements into clear, actionable plans. Support the company’s positioning as a strategic partner through thought leadership and technical insight. What you bring 10+ years in software engineering, including 4+ years in a leadership role such as Head of Engineering, CTO, Engineering Manager, Principal Engineer, or Tech Lead. Strong hands‑on experience with React, Next.js, React Native, Node.js, GraphQL, and cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure). Demonstrated experience growing engineering teams from small groups to larger, well‑structured units while implementing strong engineering practices. Deep understanding of software architecture, scalability, and performance optimisation. Experience in consultancy, agency, or multi‑project environments is highly desirable. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to bridge complex technical concepts and business strategy.
