Overview Provide high-level strategic support and advice within a complex and dynamic custodial environment. Ongoing, Full-Time opportunity. VPS Grade 6: $138,631 - $185,518 plus superannuation. The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Strategic Advisor to provide a critical role at Barwon Prison. About the Business Unit Barwon Prison is a maximum-security facility for men, located 6km north west of Lara, 20km from Geelong and about 70km from Melbourne, Victoria. The prison accommodates a complex cohort, including sentenced and non‑sentenced, high‑risk protection, high‑security and management people in custody. The prison safely and humanely contains and manages the individual needs of the men, with the aim of providing a successful transition back into the community or on their continued journey through the prison system. The prison embeds the foundations of the Safer Prisons Strategy, recognising that dynamic, physical and procedural security are essential to safety, while a multi‑disciplinary approach ensures custodial, clinical and program staff jointly support risk management, rehabilitation and individual care. About the Role The strategic advisor will provide high‑level strategic support and advice to the HMP Barwon executive leadership team. Operating within a complex and dynamic custodial environment, this role is essential in ensuring the prison's leadership is equipped with timely, informed, and forward‑thinking recommendations that align with both local operational priorities and broader departmental objectives. Some of your duties will include: Provide high level, strategic support to the General Manager to contribute to the safe operations of HMP Barwon. Provide authoritative advice, guidance and feedback to members of the Leadership Team on work products submitted to the General Manager for approval, including advice on appropriate legislative delegations. Initiate the identification and analysis of emerging policy issues, trends and linkages relevant to the correctional setting and provide relevant advice to the General Manager about how to respond to those issues. About you To be successful in this role, you will have: Clear capacity to deliver highly targeted, well‑researched, and comprehensive authoritative advice on a range of policy and operational issues relating to HMP Barwon Proven ability to perform effectively under pressure in a dynamic environment, with complex stakeholders. High level written communication and strategic thinking skills, with demonstrated highly refined judgement and political nous. Qualifications & requirements Tertiary qualification(s) in a relevant discipline would be highly regarded.
