Tasmanian Irrigation Pty Ltd is a State-owned Company that develops, owns and operates irrigation schemes in Tasmania, in accordance with sound commercial practice, to facilitate the expansion of agricultural production in the State. Tasmanian Irrigation owns and operates 19 irrigation schemes across the state, along with additional inherited infrastructure. Tasmanian Irrigation’s promise to our irrigator customers is to “provide irrigators reliable and consistent water at the lowest sustainable price while responsibly and sustainably managing our water resources, scheme assets and the environment.” The Company also oversees development of irrigation schemes, funded through a unique public / private partnership model. Tasmanian Irrigation now oversees 26,000 individual infrastructure assets with a replacement value of approximately $500 million and has the capacity to deliver more than 151,000 megalitres of irrigation water each year. All schemes developed and operated by Tasmanian Irrigation are economically viable, environmentally sustainable, have strong community endorsement, are designed to last at least 100 years and deliver water at an average reliability of more than 95 per cent per annum. ABOUT THE ROLE Tasmanian Irrigation is seeking an experienced Environmental Lead – Construction to provide senior environmental leadership and oversight across the construction phases of two major irrigation projects: the Northern Midlands Irrigation Scheme (NMIS) and the South West Irrigation Scheme (SWISA). In this pivotal role, you will ensure construction planning and delivery aligns with Tasmanian Irrigation’s environmental management system, statutory approvals, and both Tasmanian and Commonwealth environmental legislation. You will work with project managers, contractors, and specialist ecologists to implement Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs), manage environmental risks, and build capability within our internal environmental team. WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED Key to this role will be an individual’s ability to: Provide strong technical leadership in construction environmental management for major civil or infrastructure projects. Apply a thorough understanding of Tasmanian and Commonwealth environmental legislation and approvals processes. Oversee contractor environmental performance, including audits, inspections, and incident management. Coordinate specialist environmental inputs and translate technical advice into practical requirements for project teams. Build collaborative relationships with internal teams, contractors, regulators, and community stakeholders. Demonstrate sound judgement, problem‑solving skills, and the ability to deliver high‑quality outcomes within tight timeframes. You must demonstrate prior experience in a similar position, preferably (although not essential) within the development of irrigation schemes, wastewater or sewerage networks, or large‑scale industrial installations. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE The successful Environmental Lead – Construction will have: Extensive experience in construction environmental management for major civil or infrastructure projects. Strong knowledge of Tasmanian and Commonwealth environmental legislation and approvals processes. Proven ability to implement CEMPs and manage environmental compliance on‑site. Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and lead without direct authority. Leadership and mentoring capability to support and develop environmental practitioners. Sound judgement, risk awareness, and problem‑solving skills. As the Environmental Lead – Construction, you will work closely with the Project Development and Delivery Team, TI’s design partner, other technical specialists, and the Manager of Environment – Projects to provide expert environmental leadership and support across assigned projects.
