Arakwal (Aboriginal Identified) Opportunity - Field Officer Grade 1-2 Ongoing role – Located in Byron Bay Salary relative to experience, and ranges from $56,327 - $61,836 p.a. plus employer's contribution to superannuation About the role National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has a unique opportunity for a Field Officer to work as part of the team and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment, flora, fauna and Aboriginal heritage. This is an Aboriginal Identified role where Aboriginal identity, cultural knowledge or connections are a genuine aspect of the role. Positions are specifically noted under the provisions of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act (1977). This position is for Arakwal People with cultural association. Field Officers assist with a diverse range of activities relating to maintenance and improvement to park assets within NPWS parks and reserves. You will be guided by the senior field staff, in your day-to-day work including: Pest and weed control Routine operation and maintenance of plant and equipment Maintenance of campground and day use areas Respond to visitor enquiries Assist with compliance activities as required. You are a good decision-maker with the ability to lead work tasks at times and solve problems in the field. Requirements & Qualifications This is an Identified role under Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 and Aboriginality is an essential requirement. Aboriginal identified positions require Aboriginal identity, cultural knowledge or connections; applicants must be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, identify as such, and be accepted by the community. Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal people, government organisations and communities with the ability to communicate across cultures. Knowledge, respect and understanding of Aboriginal cultural issues. Current Australian Class C Driver’s licence or equivalent, and ability to drive 4WD vehicles. Ability to obtain and use MR Licence where appropriate. Demonstrated ability and experience to carry out all duties safely and ability to obtain relevant SafeWork NSW certification to operate and maintain plant and equipment, including conditionally registered vehicles, watercraft, lifting apparatus, and minor road maintenance plant, and willingness to obtain a First Aid certificate. Certification, or ability to obtain certification within the probationary period (up to 12 months), in operating a chainsaw to crosscut or basic tree felling standard; ability to operate two‑way radio. Ability to carry out frontline firefighting duties and support roles, including obtaining and maintaining certification as a crew member within the probationary period (up to 12 months), and willingness to fly in light aircraft. This is a physically active role suited to candidates of all genders who are fit, enjoy working outdoors as part of a team, and are eager to learn and develop the skills and qualifications needed to contribute toward improving and maintaining some of NSW’s most precious natural places. Field Officer applicants must meet the requirements of a firefighting medical, which includes clearance to undertake frontline firefighting roles. Applicants must pass the task-based fitness assessment to a moderate level within the probationary period (up to 12 months) and annually thereafter.
