About the roles The Scientific Advisory Group (the Group) is a part‑time panel of independent experts tasked with examining and providing comments on biosecurity import risk analyses (BIRAs) being conducted by the Director of Biosecurity. What the Scientific Advisory Group does May be asked at any stage in a BIRA to review and provide comments on any aspect of the BIRA. Consider whether technical submissions received from stakeholders in response to the draft BIRA report have been properly considered. Consider whether all relevant matters relating to the likely economic consequences of a disease or pest incursion have been properly considered. Assess whether the conclusions of the draft and provisional BIRA report are logical and scientifically reasonable, based on the material presented. Ensure any other scientific issues that have arisen during the BIRA process have been adequately considered. Provide findings and make recommendations for the department's consideration to overcome any identified deficiencies in the draft or provisional BIRA report or any other aspect of the BIRA. All final decisions rest with the department. As independent experts, members may be engaged separately to review standard import risk analyses. Knowledge and experience requirements Scientific or economic leadership in fields relevant to biosecurity. A strong record of contribution to science or technical methods underpinning BIRA processes. Proven expertise and qualifications in biosecurity risk analysis. The economic impact assessment of pest or disease incursions. Agricultural, environmental or trade‑related biosecurity.
